1. Launch MSI Afterburner

2. Click “ Settings

3. Click “ Monitoring ” and go to “ Active hardware monitoring graphs ” and select the information you want to display in the OSD (we use “GPU usage” as an example)

First, ask yourself a question – does it make sense to overclock the card? Passive COs:

Such cooling systems are not designed for overclocking, not only because of the lack of active cooling of the radiator, but also because of the lack of ventilation of the memory and batteries. And if the memory, in principle, does not heat up so much, then the batteries, when critical temperatures are exceeded, can please you with a small salute. It is for this reason that overclocking such video cards is not recommended.

Turbine CO:

Turbine cooling systems are mainly found on reference video cards. Such cards cannot boast of good overclocking potential, but they can still be overclocked. A feature of such a CO is that the radiator touches all the heating elements of the board.

The main advantage of turbine COs is that they throw hot air outside the case – this is justified for cases with poor ventilation. This is where the advantages of turbine COs end, and the cons begin: not too high efficiency and increased, relative to classical COs, noise level.

“Classic” COs:

For the most part, classic COs can be described as “a heatsink with fins perpendicular to the card, with one to four fans that blow around the heatsink”.

The most controversial type of cooling systems. Similar SOs are installed mainly on non-reference cards, and this is where the manufacturers have room for a flight of fancy. And this means – what? That’s right, every manufacturer tries to somehow stand out. Either a striking appearance, or performance (and often both), or price. And here you need to take a closer look at the map. No, my friend, do not look at the appearance and original design solutions, you are an overclocker, you should only care about quality.

The easiest way to evaluate SO performance is to google it. There are many comparisons of the same cards with different COs on the Internet, and no less overclocking results. On them, you can approximately estimate what maximum frequency this or that card “takes”, and to what temperatures it warms up.

However, this is not all. Definitely – you hear, friend, be sure to check if there are radiators on the power supply system of the video card. If they are not there, the consequences, even with a seemingly good PCB airflow by the cooling system fans, can be rather sad – I already talked about them when I talked about passive cooling systems.

The video card power system can be identified by the abundance of such gizmos:

These are mosfets, without proper cooling they like to warm up, and when overclocked, especially with raising the voltage, they also burn out, which is accompanied by popping and sparks, sometimes even smoke. Therefore, immediately see if they have a radiator that looks something like this:

However, the presence of airflow and a radiator does not always save mosfets from burnout – especially if you are carried away by excessive voltage increase. Despite the fact that most cards now have protection (OCP – Over Current Protection, or OVP – Over Voltage Protection), this is not a 100% guarantee that the mosfets will be fine with excessive overclocking.

Remember, for example, the story of the GTX590 overclocking and raw firewood, which did not include protection, which caused a lot of burnt cards. However, the GTX590 burned (and are burning) under overclocking and with good firewood, so if you, mon ami, are the happy owner of this card, you have never overclocked anything, but you really want to, it’s not worth it. Thirdly, find out how many power phases are soldered on the video card. How to do it? Either by googling, or simply by counting the number of chokes on the video card. In the picture below, they are highlighted with a red rectangle:

In the general case, the number of phases has the formula G + M, where G is the number of power phases assigned to the GPU, that is, the graphics processor is what we want to overclock. M is the number of power phases reserved for memory. There is no particular point in driving the memory, it consumes little energy, the phases do not heat up much. The number of power phases reserved for memory does not bother you.

For the “standard” number of phases, you can take the number of phases set on the reference model of video cards. And, in general, the more phases, the better. Too many of them will not cause harm, and there will be no benefit for non-extreme overclocking either. But, obviously, a more complex map will cost more. But too little number of phases leads to an increased load on them – that is, on the mosfets. What does this lead to? To overheating and to the consequences described above. Manufacturers seeking to save money reduce the number of phases, which reduces the overclocking potential and increases the risk of card failure during overclocking.

Software part

My young friend, you are probably already fidgeting with impatience in your chair and want to ask me: well, everything is clear with the pieces of iron, but how to overclock? Patience, I will answer you, only patience. Acceleration does not like hasty and thoughtless actions.

There are many utilities for overclocking video cards – Riva Tuner, PowerStrip, Asus SmartDoctor, MSI Afterburner – here is an incomplete list of them. It is clear that I will not consider everything, this is not necessary. I will only talk about the latter, since, from my point of view, it is the most convenient for overclocking any video cards.

However, an overclocking utility isn’t the only thing you’ll need. Do you want the video card to work not only fast, but also stable? This means that utilities will also be needed to, oddly enough, check stability. 3D Markers can act as such utilities – for example, 3D Mark 11 for video cards with DX11, or 3D Mark Vantage for video cards with DX10. OCCT is also suitable for checking the stability of the card, it will quickly give an idea of ​​​​how stable the card is at the moment.

And now we proceed to the most interesting – to overclocking.

If there is a desire to overclock the card with an increase in voltage, in the main window press the “Settings” button and tick off what is highlighted in the screenshot below with a red rectangle:

Next, you need to increase the core clock (Core Clock), for example, in increments of 10 MHz, it depends on the specific card model, and conduct an express stability test. You can take both larger and smaller steps.

Express testing method: Download OCCT, install. In the GPU tab: 3D, set these

settings. The test window opens:

In it, you are only interested in the “Errors” indicator. As long as it remains at zero, everything is in order. If errors begin to appear, it means that the card has reached the overclocking limit at the current voltage. A small number of errors is not terrible, in games it may not appear at all. However, if their number increases at an alarming rate – this is a clear overclocking, artifacts will begin to appear in games.

So, if the card has reached the overclocking limit, reduce the frequencies a little, set the value “0 h 15 min” in the “Duration” field in OCCT – that is, 15-minute testing – and, in fact, test. If during these 15 minutes the temperature of the card does not rise above 95 degrees and the error rate is at zero or small, then this is the overclocking ceiling. If the temperature does not rise to 95 degrees, it means that the card can be driven further. That is, increase the voltage and frequency of the core, conduct express testing, and so on until you hit the voltage or temperature limit. The maximum safe voltage for each specific card can be Googled, but usually Afterburner does not allow you to go beyond it anyway. However, it’s better to be safe. The maximum safe temperature is 100-110 degrees, depending on the card model,

After the card is overclocked either to the limit or to the desired frequency, a thorough stability test needs to be carried out. This is, for example, 3-4 runs of 3D Mark and half an hour in Unigine Heaven. If annoying artifacts are observed, or the screen blinks / crashes to the desktop, and at the same time a pop-up message “The video driver stopped responding and has been restored” appears in the tray – this is overclocking. If the temperature is normal, it is necessary to raise the voltage, and if it is overheating, reduce the voltage and frequency.

Another overclocking technique is overclocking at known frequencies and voltages that the card is capable of. For this you need:

1) google the overclocking results of this particular card (keep in mind that if you have, say, a Gigabyte GTX580 SO, then you need to google the results for the Gigabyte GTX580 SO, the overclocking results of other GTX580s will not work). 2) Find out what approximate values ​​are maximum (of course, you should look at the results with native cooling, you don’t need the results of overclocking under liquid nitrogen). 3) Set the same voltage and a slightly lower frequency. 4) Conduct a rapid test, and based on the results, decide whether to drive further.

How to enable FPS in MSI Afterburner

As a rule, lowering the temperature by even a few degrees will reduce the speed of the fans of the active cooler, which makes a noticeable difference in the noise level. In some programs (MSI Afterburner, Trixx) you can go even further and further reduce CO noise by adjusting the cooler algorithm. As a first approximation, you can focus on a temperature of 80 degrees Celsius. That is, change the fan speed so that under load the chip does not warm up above 80 degrees. However, this is another topic, but today we will talk about undervolting.

How to reduce stress?

It is desirable to lower the voltage gradually. For example, from 1.200 V first to 1.150 V, and then in steps of 0.01, i.e. up to 1.140, 1.130, etc. After each decrease, you can test the stability of the video card, that is, keep it under load for a while. To do this, you can use the same FurMark.

Undervolting is somewhat like overclocking, only in the opposite direction – instead of increasing the frequency, you need to lower the voltage. After the first failure (the driver will display a message), you should go back one step by increasing the GPU voltage, and thoroughly test the stability of this mode.

Consider several ways of undervolting. The first two are reduced to the use of special utilities, and the third, more advanced, to flashing the BIOS of the video card.

Program method

MSI Afterburner

In the main window of this program, there is an adjustable parameter Core Voltage, which is responsible for the level of voltage supplied to the core of the video card. As a rule, this parameter is in the range of 1.100–1.200 V and is set by the manufacturer with some margin.

In principle, you can reduce the Core Voltage indicator with any step (but preferably with a small one), this operation cannot somehow harm the video card. The worst that will happen is that the computer will freeze, or, more likely, a message will appear in the system tray stating that an error has occurred in the video card driver.

The disadvantage of the MSI Afterburner program is that it allows you to adjust the voltage of far from all video cards.

Sapphire TRIXX

Despite the fact that the name of the Sapphire Trixx application, as in the case of MSI Afterburner, contains a mention of a specific manufacturer of video cards, the utility works with adapters from all companies, not just those indicated.

The advantage of Trixx is that this program can adjust the voltage of more video cards. In other words, if Core Voltage is disabled in Afterburner, try Trixx.

The voltage regulation procedure in Trixx is not fundamentally different from that for Afterburner. The required slider is located in the Overclocking tab and is called VDDC.

The only drawback of Trixx in terms of undervolting is that the utility cannot restore the voltage value when the computer is restarted. Only the core and memory frequencies are restored, and the voltage must be set manually each time. Afterburner does not have this drawback, but, as already mentioned, it supports fewer video cards.

Changing settings in the graphics card’s BIOS

Let’s start with the usual warning in such cases. You carry out all the operations described below at your own peril and risk. Do not flash the BIOS if you are not sure of the correctness of your actions. A damaged or failed firmware update can damage the graphics card, voiding the manufacturer’s warranty.

So, what to do if the video card is not supported by the Afterburner program, and you don’t want to set the voltage manually using Trixx after each reboot of the PC? In this case, you can edit the parameters specified in the BIOS of the video card.

AMD Radeon

You can use the GPU-Z utility or ATIWinflash to save the BIOS to a file on your computer . The second program is preferable because it will come in handy again later to update the BIOS, while GPU-Z will no longer be used.
