MSI shows the external graphics card dock GUS at CES 2017

Already five years ago during CES 2012, MSI showed an external graphics card dock called GUS II intended for laptops. However, the lack of a standardized connection meant that the product was put on the shelf. With Thunderbolt 3, this has been remedied and the company thus brings the concept back to life.

At CES 2017, MSI’s new GUS (Graphics Upgrade System) will be shown, which is an external cabinet for mounting any stationary graphics card. Like other similar solutions, MSI GUS has its own power supply and a number of USB connections, which can be used for gaming mice and keyboards, for example.

To connect the device, the laptop, or desktop, needs to meet certain requirements. In addition to Thunderbolt 3 via USB Type-C, the connection also needs support for the external graphics standard (eGFX) extension. In hardware path, an active cable is also required and on the software side, the operating system Windows 10 applies.

MSI does not specify a release date or price for GUS, but still claims that it, unlike previous variants shown, should be launched sharply.
