New South Korean Missile Defense Radar

New South Korean Missile Defense Radar

The state has completed a detailed design of the new radar, according to an announcement by the South Korean Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) on Wednesday. However, this is not the first better equipment for detecting hostile activities, but a radar for the anti-missile defense system, i.e. one on which many lives and strategic military goals depend.

A modern South Korean radar is ready. Now it’s time to adapt it to production

This new radar is the so-called MFR (Multi-Functional Radar), which was developed for the long-range surface-to-air (L-SAM) missile interception system. This defense system is to be deployed by 2026 as part of the low-level multi-layer missile defense program. This means that L-SAM will protect South Korea by shooting down missiles at an altitude of approximately 50-60 kilometers.

The design of the new radar is one thing – it also needs to be manufactured and tested in a real environment. According to current plans, work in this direction will be completed in January 2025, but engineers already believe that it is said to be 20% more efficient in detecting missiles compared to current radars.
