Nvidia Geforce GTX 990M is called GTX 980 with performance equivalent to GTX 970

The Maxwell architecture is an energy-efficient story, which has made it possible to push performance equivalent to desktops into portable gaming machines. However, Nvidia will not stop at the Geforce GTX 980M, but plans to soon raise the bar further with a new performance model in the absolute top tier.

Previous reports have said that the new flagship is called Geforce GTX 990M, but according to information to SweClockers, the name will be GTX 980 – completely identical to the stationary sibling. This includes 8 GB GDDR5 and the GM204 graphics circuit, which by name can have all 2,048 CUDA cores activated.

Despite the naming, the new mobile battleship is not said to live up to its name, at least in terms of performance as it will be on a par with a Geforce GTX 970M in SLI or stationary GTX 970. It is worth mentioning that this can vary greatly between different computer models, as the mobile Geforce GTX 980 according to previous information will have a variable TDP value from 100 to 185 W.

The latter gives computer manufacturers free rein to customize the graphics card for different form factors. For example, a lower TDP value with lower clock frequencies could be used for slimmer computers, while a higher value would provide more performance in thicker donuts with more cooling capacity.

Mobile Geforce GTX 980 is expected to arrive within the next few weeks.
