Nvidia Geforce RTX 2060 – specifications, rumors and pictures

Unlike many speculations, it will not be a new Geforce GTX from Nvidia in the middle class, but the model will be named RTX 2060. The first three letters imply support for all of the functions belonging to the architecture Turing, in support of ray tracing in real time and machine learning with Tensor cores.

According to previous information, the new graphics card will be based on the TU106 circuit, which is also used in Nvidia’s Geforce RTX 2070. This is of course a scaled-down variant with fewer SM clusters than RTX 2070 and for RTX 2060 it is said that 6 out of 36 are off.

With 30 SM clusters, the Geforce RTX 2060 would have 1,920 CUDA cores, which is a 50 percent increase over the GTX 1060 and the same level as the popular GTX 1070. However, this does not include the architectural improvements in Turing and even if clock speeds are lower, RTX 2060 performs better than GTX 1070.

The number of clusters also means that the graphics card would have a total of 240 Tensor cores for machine learning and 30 RT cores for ray tracing in real time. The latter should be enough to pull around Battlefield V with ray tracing on, at least in the resolution of 1,920 × 1,080 pixels.

While the number of computing devices is still a mystery, it is more or less clear that the graphics card is equipped with 6 GB of GDDR6 graphics memory. The capacity reveals that it is most likely a memory bus of 192 bits, which is the same width as the long-range Geforce GTX 1060.

Despite a narrow bus, the speeds delivered by the GDDR6 standard mean that relatively high bandwidth is possible. At the same frequencies as the other cards in the RTX series, a 192-bit memory bus provides a bandwidth of 336 GB / s, while a slightly slower effective frequency of 12,000 MHz gives 288 GB / s. In both cases it is higher bandwidth than 256 GB / s offered by GTX 1070 and significantly higher than 192 GB / s for GTX 1060.

No matter how scaled-down the graphics circuit becomes, it’s no big deal that Nvidia’s Geforce RTX 2060 will have lower power consumption than the RTX 2070 with a full-featured TU106. Here, it is very possible that the company invests in a TDP value of 150 W or just below, so that the model in reference design can cope with a single 6-pin PCI Express connector.

So far, only Videocardz has published images on the Geforce RTX 2060. The graphics card is from Gigabyte and looks like a standard model with a heat sink that is cooled by a double set of fans. This particular model is equipped with an 8-pin connector, but it does not have to say anything about what will be the case with Nvidia’s reference version.

By all accounts, the launch of Nvidia Geforce RTX 2060 will take place at the beginning of next year and here we are talking about the second week in January, during the electronics fair CES 2019. The question on everyone’s lips is the price and probably the model goes in as a direct replacement for GTX 1070 with a suggested retail price of $ 349-399.
