Nvidia Geforce RTX 3080 is not enough for HD textures in Far Cry 6

In early October, Ubisoft launched Far Cry 6, the latest installment in a long-running adventure series. This time it takes place on the fictional island of Yara, in a fight against the dictator Antón Castillo who holds the island in an iron grip.

► The system requirements for Far Cry 6 are high and low

To explore Yara with the eye candy turned up to the max, on the other hand, you need proper graphics memory. The 35 GB optional add-on package with HD resolution textures requires at least 11 GB of graphics memory, which has led to some performance issues. The recommendation for 4K UHD in 30 FPS with ray tracing activated is already on either AMD Radeon RX 6800 or Nvidia Geforce RTX 3080. However, the latter is not enough for the HD textures, but stumbles on the finish line with 1 GB too little.

Without sufficient graphics memory, the textures cannot be loaded correctly, as evidenced by, among other things, mixing them or replacing them with lower-resolution counterparts. This happens mainly when combined with ray tracing and 4K. If the graphics settings are turned down slightly, both the Geforce RTX 3080 and the previous generation RTX 2080 Ti can just power the game with HD textures in the 1440p resolution. It shows tests performed by DSOG.

AMD’s latest generation does not have the same problem, as the recommendation Radeon RX 6800 with 16 GB of graphics memory exceeds the requirement by a good margin. It is worth noting that the Geforce RTX 3060 with its 12 GB in theory should be able to handle it. Ubisoft recommends users who do not meet the requirements to disable the texture pack to avoid performance issues.

Graphic memory-consuming textures are not the only performance-related concern. Processors with the Simultaneous-Multithreading (SMT) technology, called Intel Hyper-Threading (HT), and six or more cores have poorer performance with the feature turned on. This suggests that the game allocates calculations to two threads on a core instead of dividing the work into two cores, which do not have to divide their capacity into two threads. Processors that have four cores, however, benefit from having a multi-wire technology activated.

Interesting in this context is that Far Cry 6 is an AMD title and that the company’s graphics card consistently has more graphics memory than Nvidia. The AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT is equipped with 12 GB GDDR6 while the trio RX 6800, RX 6800 XT and RX 6900 XT have 16 GB. For Nvidia’s Geforce RTX 3000 series, the amount of memory wildly varies from 8 GB up to 24 GB.

Does your graphics card have enough graphics memory for the HD textures in Far Cry 6?
