Nvidia “GP102” is the circuit for the next Geforce GTX Titan – gets 3,840 CUDA cores

When Nvidia launched the Geforce GTX 1080, the bar was raised again in the top of performance. However, not everyone was convinced of the performance jump from previous top models, but with the small and energy-efficient GP104 circuit that makes up the card, there is room to scale up the design to significantly faster donations without hitting the ceiling.

* Like the Geforce GTX Titan and GTX Titan X, it is stated that the next one will only be sold with Nvidia’s reference design, now called “Founders Edition”.
** Price for Founders Edition, models from partner manufacturers get the lower price.

Now find out details about a graphics circuit called GP102 and which will lay the foundation for both the GTX 1080 Ti and the next GTX Titan. Relatively the previous generation, it is still a small circuit of 478 mm2, which will house 3,840 CUDA cores and a 384-bit memory bus. For GTX 1080 Ti, the number of CUDA cores should be slightly lower, but maintain the same clock frequencies.

The memory bus does not completely unexpectedly include GDDR5X memory that is to be run somewhere between 10,000 and 12,000 MHz. Depending on the speed, this gives a bandwidth of 480 and up to 576 GB / s, which can be compared to today’s record high 512 GB / s for AMD’s Radeon R9 Fury series. For the next Geforce GTX Titan, the capacity should be no less than 24 GB, while the GTX 1080 Ti will have to settle for 12 GB.

The specifications suggest that the GP102 simply has 50 percent higher capacity than the full-scale GP104 used in the Geforce GTX 1080, although with slightly lower clock frequencies. If you look at SweClocker’s performance index for the graphics card, this would mean 40 percent higher performance than for the GTX 1080 and that it is 70-75 percent above the GTX Titan X depending on resolution.

Interestingly, this is not the first time rumors of GP102 abound. Assuming the information is correct, the graphics circuit is a break with the trend for Nvidia, which for several generations has not had a graphics circuit with a number combination between 104 (middle class) and 100 (top class).

Nvidia’s CEO Jen-Hsun Huang presents the GP100 graphics circuit and the Tesla P100 graphics card.

The fact that the company wedges a new circuit in between can mean that the monster circuit GP100 with HBM2 memory as previously announced is reserved for calculation cards. What speaks for this is that GP102 is said to have the same number of CUDA cores, where Nvidia may thus have removed several computationally oriented parts and HBM2 memory in order to reduce the costs of consumer-oriented graphics cards.

The same information regarding the fact that Nvidia retains previous pricing for the next Geforce GTX Titan, which thus receives a recommended price of 999 dollars or just over 10,000 kronor including VAT. The sibling model GTX 1080 Ti is said to be at 799 dollars or just over 8,000 kronor.

It is not clear when Nvidia can launch the duo, but it will probably be until the end of the year at the earliest. It is worth mentioning that according to an earlier report, AMD will have brought the Vega graphics family forward from the beginning of 2017 to the end of 2016, in order to be able to take up the battle with Nvidia for the performance throne more quickly.
