Nvidia price war with Geforce GTX 680

Today’s launch of the Geforce GTX 680 was preceded by a lot of secrecy, not least regarding the price. Nvidia’s first bid was USD 550, which could be translated to a little over SEK 5,000 including VAT in Swedish stores.

It is now clear that Nvidia is starting a minor price war in the performance class, despite the fact that the Geforce GTX 680 is in most respects a faster graphics card than the closest competitor Radeon HD 7970.

On launch day, Nvidia lowered the target price to $ 499. In Sweden, the new graphics card costs between SEK 4,600 and just under SEK 5,000 including VAT, which is basically the same price points where the Radeon HD 7970 is housed.

The pressure is thus on AMD to reposition the Radeon HD 7970, but since the red team has already had time for more models in lower price ranges, it can all trigger a cascade effect. A possible price reduction of the Radeon HD 7970 could force adjustments to other graphics cards in the 7000 series, in order to maintain the price separation between the models.

In addition, Nvidia plans to launch more and, above all, cheaper models in the new Geforce 600 series. In other words, it is set for lower prices on graphics cards in the near future, a welcome news for everyone in upgrade thoughts.
