NVIDIA ready to use a Volta GPU for a new accelerator devoted to cryptocurrency mining

NVIDIA it seems ready to expand the range of solutions CMP (Crypto Mining Processor) targeting miners with a new solution based on GV100 “Volta” GPU. The GPU in question, previously used by NVIDIA in the HPC field and on the Titan V, should form the heart of a renamed accelerator “CMP 100HX“, whose photos have appeared online in the past few hours.

The pictures show us a card without video outputs, but with two connectors for power supply and a system of passive cooling, which implies its use in environments other than the PC environment, such as a mining rig. There is even an NVLink connector, although its presence should not be of any use for the intended task.

According to sources, the CMP 100HX is expected to achieve a hash rate of 81 MH / s at 250W, similar to the Titan V. The card should therefore have 5120 CUDA cores and 12 GB of HBM2 memory, although the amount of CUDA core and memory may be less, as is the case with other CMP solutions compared to the models from which they were derived.

In the latest financial accounts NVIDIA said it has sold CMP cards in the fourth quarter for just $ 24 million, down from $ 105 million in the previous quarter, for a annual turnover of US $ 550 million. The turnover seems to be deflating and the arrival of the CMP 100HX should not affect this trend. Either way, for NVIDIA this is another way to try and make money out of a GPU that would otherwise have a future as an ornament.
