Nvidia’s LHR limiter with dual mining: up to 70% ETH Performance (NBMiner crypto)

Nvidia's LHR limiter with dual mining

According to the NBMiner crypto mining software release notes , the tool can now unlock up to 70% of the original GPU mining performance of GPUs with NVIDIA’s Lite Hash Rate algorithm.

In mid-May, the company reintroduced variants of the RTX 3080, 3070 and 3060 Ti with a new GPU revision that featured the same LHR algorithm that debuted with the RTX 3060 in February, which could have the rate limiter removed. hash using a beta driver accidentally released by Nvidia.

All NVIDIA RTX 30 GPUs produced today including the 3070 Ti and 3080 Ti models (with the exception of the GeForce RTX 3090), have an LHR limiter by default. This seriously affects the mining capacity and profitability of the cards. There are rumors that closed mining pools have been able to unlock LHR performance, but no actual evidence has been published so far.

The NBMiner update does not unlock the mining performance of the LHR chips. Instead, it offers an adjustable value that determines the maximum unlockable hash rate for a specific GPU. The developer suggests using 68%, which means that the GPU will not offer 50% (the factory default) for 68% of Ethereum mining using the ethash algorithm exclusively (no other algorithm is currently supported).

While 68% -70% is not optimal compared to the original RTX 30 prior to the introduction of the LHR, it is definitely much better than 50%. Possibly enough to convince some miners to try some cost-effective LHR cards.

Release Notes for Version 39.0 (08-15-2021):

New Ethash Feature : New LHR mode for ETH mining on RTX 30 series LHR GPUs, compatible with Windows and Linux, capable of obtaining up to 70% of the maximum unlocked hash rate.

  • This mode can be adjusted with the -lhr argument, it only works for ethash at this time.
  • -lhr defaults to 0, which means that even if -lhr is not set, LHR mode with -lhr 68 will be applied to LHR GPUs if certain GPUs are detected.
  • Set the LHR mode by setting -lhr, a specific value will tell the miner to try to hit the percentage value of the maximum unlock rate, e.g. Eg -lhr 68 will expect to get 68% hashrate for the same GPU model other than LHR.
  • A higher -lhr value will result in a higher hash rate, but has a greater chance of executing a lock state, which will lead to a much lower hash rate.
  • A good initial setting value is 68, which has been proven to be stable in most rig configurations.
  • The -lhr value can be set for each GPU using a comma separated list, -lhr 65,68,0, -1, where -1 means disable LHR mode.

One of the reasons for the current lack of graphics card stock , although not the only one, is the massive use of “gaming” GPUs in cryptocurrency mining systems such as Ethereum. This fact created a very high demand for graphics cards and massive purchases by miners, which led companies like NVIDIA to take certain measures to try to mitigate the situation, such as the new revision of their NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 GPUS ” LHR “(Little Hash Rate).

NBMiner promises to restore 70% of the RTX 30 LHR’s mining capacity

Since its arrival, first with the RTX 3060, there have been several ways to bypass that limitation, from a failure of NVIDIA itself releasing a beta driver that removed the mining limitation , to third-party mods focused on achieving unrestricted performance in crypto mining. . Now the latest update of the NBMiner software is added to its version 39.0 , which promises to restore up to 70% of the crypto mining capacity of the LHR versions of the NVIDIA RTX 30s.

The optimization, therefore, does not manage to bypass NVIDIA’s restrictions 100% on its latest cards, but it is capable of restoring much of its mining power. Also, unlike other private programs exclusive to certain groups of crypto miners , NBMiner is publicly available.

It remains to be seen if NVIDIA counterattacks with some other limitation and if this program is launched it affects even more in the purchase of graphics cards for crypto mining.
