Nvidia’s Turing-based graphics card sells better than Pascal at launch

Nvidia’s launch of the graphics architecture Turing in 2018 meant a step forward in the graphics card market with support for ray tracing. The two models the company introduced at the time of launch were the first to hit the market with support ray tracing in real time, but a more talked about aspect of the graphics cards was the high price tag.

During its annual Investor Day, however, Nvidia says that despite the price, the models sold better than the previous Pascal generation in the first eight weeks. Compared to Pascal, this is an increase of 45 percent, then specifically for models with a price tag of 300 USD, corresponding to 3,500 kronor including VAT, or more.

The Turing-based models currently account for 2 percent of the user base, while Pascal is still the most common with 50 percent. After that, older generations end up with a share of 48 percent. Nvidia also mentions that 90 percent of users have graphics cards that are below the Geforce GTX 1660 Ti in terms of performance.

At the beginning of 2019, Nvidia lowered its revenue forecasts as sales of graphics cards in the RTX series sold worse than expected. The company then admitted that prices may have been set too high, which had a direct impact on sales.

The forecasts were confirmed in the company’s latest quarterly report, which showed that sales in the gaming segment had fallen, which led to worse results than expected for the company. This was attributed at the time to the fact that only expensive models were on the market and that customers are still waiting for games that can take advantage of the new features in the graphics cards.
