During the presentation at CFMS, Kioxia presented for the first time the performance of the PCIe 5.0 SSD, which is now only a prototype disk using the new generation of PCIe lines. The matter is so serious that in relation to PCIe 4.0, this new standard traditionally doubles the transfer, which means that it allows up to 32 Gb / s transfer.
Kioxia has revealed the performance of the PCIe 5.0 SSD
Thus, the performance of the PCIe 5.0 SSD by Kioxia has shown that even now even prototypes of disks for the new standard of PCIe buses offer enormous performance. We are talking about sequential read and write of 14,000 MB / s and 7,000 MB / s, which translates into a successive increase of 103% in the speed of sequential read and 67% in the case of writing. In addition, these new-generation SSDs will also be 50-79% faster in random operations, and their response will drop significantly, by 77% in terms of read delay and 50% in terms of write delay.

With only a PCIe 5.0 SSD for data centers at stake, Kioxia will be offering it in both EDSFF E3 and 2.5-inch U.2 formats. The company is going to provide it with an eight-channel controller in the data center version and a maximum of 16-channel controller for more demanding equipment. On the capacity side, 1.6 to 30 TB models with a durability of up to 3 DWPD (via Tom’s Hardware) are to come into play.

Kioxia will release its unique PCIe 5.0 SSD in the fourth quarter of this year and expects server manufacturers to spend five to six months checking and certifying drives for their products. So we will wait at least a dozen or so months for consumer versions.
