Radeon 5600 XT, Ryzen 4000 Mobile and Threadripper 3990X: the novelties of AMD

Those who expected some small information on PS5 or Xbox Series X remained dry. AMD's keynote however was quite rich, moreover it was widely foreseeable that at CES there would be no news on the new consoles. There has been talk of something else, from the new Radeon RX 5600 XT to the next generation of processors dedicated to laptops, very important to bring the Ryzen brand to compete for the high end of the mobile market. There was also the announcement on the new Threadripper 3990X, a power monster with a total of 64 cores.
Given the nature of the event, there was no time to deepen much to tell the truth, in the coming weeks, however, more details on the new products will certainly surface.

On the assault of NVIDIA and Intel

To see the RDNA 2 microarchitecture, the one that should integrate Ray Tracing hardware, we will have to wait until the second half of the year. We have written it several times in recent weeks and the CES has done nothing but confirm it. AMD wants to take full advantage of the current RDNA, in all the market segments in which it can be applied.
For the high end it will be necessary to wait still, in the meantime, however, with the Radeon RX 5600 XT AMD plans to give NVIDIA's GTX 1660 Super and GTX 1660 Ti a hard time. This video card should arrive at the end of January at a cost of about € 300, bringing 36 Compute Units and 6 GB of GDDR6 RAM, with frequencies starting from 1375 MHz up to 1560 MHz.
The benchamarks shown on the Las Vegas stage have compared the card with NVIDIA's GTX 1660 Ti, indicating superior performance, but for now it is better to keep your feet on the ground and wait for the first independent benchmarks before drawing conclusions.

The mobile variant of the RX 5600 is also arriving, which should differentiate itself from the desktop one exclusively for the operating frequencies. A Radeon RX 5600 with 32 Compute Units has also appeared on the AMD website, of which few details are known. These cards should provide excellent Full HD performance, but QHD should also be within their reach.

With the Threadripper 3990X instead AMD intends to conquer professional users, thanks to its 64 cores and 128 threads, numbers unthinkable to see until a few years ago, especially if you consider the price: only 3990 dollars.

Returning to the consumer world the new processors Ryzen 4000 Mobile will be essential to compete with Intel in the notebook market. Already now more AMD solutions are starting to appear, in the high end however Intel is still dictating the law. The Ryzen 3750H is a good processor but it sits just below the i5-9300H in terms of performance. With the 4000 range, the performance should increase significantly, thanks also to the improvement of the production process compared to the previous generation, which goes from 12 to 7 nm. In all, five processors of the "U" range have been announced, less powerful but also less energy-intensive, starting from 4 up to 8 Cores and 16 Threads of the top of the 4800U range, with a TDP of 15 W and frequencies up to 4.2 GHz. Two high-performance "H" variants, the 4600H and 4800H, the first with 6 cores and 12 threads, the second with 8 cores and 16 threads. According to the slides released by AMD, the gap with Intel should have been closed, with performances even higher than the i7-9750H, both in gaming and in productivity. With the arrival of the first notebooks on the market it will be possible to understand if the goal has been achieved.
