Radeon “Fiji” the only new graphics processor in the upcoming 300 series

It’s not entirely uncontroversial to release new graphics cards with older circuits, something that both AMD and Nvidia are guilty of. Perhaps the clearest example is the current Radeon 200 series, where really only Hawaii and later also Tonga can be seen as new architectures. The rest are practically older graphics processors in a new form.

According to SweClockers, it is now more or less confirmed that AMD plans to do the same in the upcoming Radeon 300 series. The flagships are equipped with the Fiji graphics processor, which is also the only real newcomer. This is followed by graphics cards with everything from the familiar Hawaii to the middle class Tonga and the lightweight Bonaire.

The new Fiji graphics processor is based on the Graphics Core Next 1.3 architecture and is first out with stacked memories or High Bandwith Memory. The latter provides 4 GB of video memory from SK Hynix with a total bandwidth of up to 640 GB / s, double the current Radeon R9 290X.

Earlier rumors suggest that Fiji will also have a full 4,096 stream processors, about 45 percent more than Hawaii in the most lavish version. The launch of Fiji with associated graphics cards is expected to take place during the second quarter of the year, probably in connection with the electronics fair Computex 2015.
