Radeon R9 280X, 270X and R7 260X at Swedish dealers

SweClocker’s review of the Radeon R9 280X and 270X showed that the latest family members in the Radeon series do not contain any significant news. Instead, AMD stops by adjusting the clock frequencies and competing against competitor Nvidia with lower prices. The price picture was, to say the least, unclear at the time of publication, but now the newcomers are slowly but surely starting to find Swedish retailers.

The outgoing Radeon HD 7970 and 7970 GHz Edition are replaced by the Radeon R9 280X with virtually identical specifications. Even though the older models are now being sold out, the newcomer is very competitively priced with prices from around SEK 2,600 and up, depending on the model and design.

The Radeon R9 280X competes primarily against the Geforce GTX 770 in the performance league. Those who choose AMD’s alternatives can, however, expect to save at least five hundred, which flags that it may start to inflate into price wars in the class.

A step further down the performance ladder is the Radeon R9 270X, which in practice is a Radeon HD 7870 with higher clock frequencies. This is about class performance with the Radeon HD 7950 and the outgoing Geforce GTX 660 Ti with prices from around SEK 1,700.

The newcomer is thus a few hundred bucks cheaper than the nearest counterparts, but Nvidia has already announced price reductions on the Geforce GTX 660 Ti and the differences may well decrease in the next few days.

The last of the gaming-class models is the Radeon R7 260X. This model is a Radeon HD 7790 with higher clock speeds and ends up somewhere around the Geforce GTX 650 Ti in performance. Here, on the other hand, it is all the more difficult to assess whether AMD manages to squeeze in with the more affordable alternative.

It should also be added that the new graphics cards, unlike their predecessors, are not included in the Never Settle campaign. AMD thus does not send with any games on the purchase, which may put the lower prices in a different light. The sales start will begin on October 11.
