Miner WildRigMulti in version 0.19 received support for a new generation of video cards from AMD – Radeon RX5700 and RX5700XT. Because at the moment this is the only miner that is optimized to work with the new AMD GPU architecture – RDNA, so everyone will be interested to know what results the miner developers from the RX5700 video cards managed to achieve. Using the optimized miner WildRigMulti 0.19.0, the AMD Radeon RX5700 graphics card (without XT) shows mining results at Vega 64 or even slightly higher, but the card’s power consumption is 40-50% lower. This is only the first iteration of miners for the RDNA architecture, so in the future it is worth waiting for the expansion of the list of supported algorithms and further improvement in the performance of the RX5700 video cards in mining.
AMD’s Radeon accelerators with RDNA architecture, which was introduced in July, entered a time of maturity when all major graphics card vendors acquired their own versions of the printed circuit board and cooling system, and the reference devices concentrated in the lower part of the price range and were gradually replaced by more advanced analogs from retail. But even if almost any model of Radeon RX 5700 XT with an open cooler is guaranteed to exceed the reference one in terms of cooling quality and acoustic characteristics, everything that we know about Navi chips completely does not have any chance to buy a video card.
Enthusiasts already have all the necessary tools in their hands to set up operating parameters new accelerators – far beyond the characteristics that AMD considers optimal. However, not every modification of the Radeon RX 5700 XT will make it possible to take full advantage of them. This is quite obvious in the context of aggressive overclocking, however, the device should be properly prepared for such a seemingly harmless procedure as undervoltage. Navi is not so simple even in an absolutely standard operating mode, because the new API for monitoring and controlling the video card gives the owner access to the information that another video card manufacturer would probably prefer to hide – the temperature of RAM chips, voltage regulator keys and the hottest point in the GPU. Today, the GIGABYTE video card under the GAMING OC brand is on the agenda, which, at first glance, represents the middle ground between the frankly budget implementations of AMD’s summer news and the sophisticated “premium” versions that invade the price range of obviously more productive video cards.
Radeon RX 5700 XT – Specifications
GIGABYTE, like other major manufacturers of graphic cards, has not yet managed to fill its product catalog with versions of the Radeon RX 5700 and Radeon RX 5700 XT for every taste and budget. In fact, the vendor has one modification of both AMD models (if you do not take reference samples into account) – and both of them belong to the GAMING OC family of video cards.
There is not even a version without an OC prefix and, as a result, higher clock frequencies, but GIGABYTE definitely does not need it, since the factory overclocking of the GAMING OC is purely symbolic. The developers of the original board only increased the base frequency of the GPU from 1605 to 1650 MHz, and the so-called Game Clock – the average calculated frequency with a typical game load – from 1755 to 1795 MHz. Not every gaming benchmark will respond to such a conservative overclocking, not to mention users.
However, this is not a reason for criticism, because we have already seen that the performance of the Radeon RX 5700 XT with great difficulty grows with increasing clock speeds (in contrast to the requirements for the cooling system). The manufacturer retained the bandwidth of GDDR6 RAM in accordance with the original specifications – 14 Gb / s.

Radeon RX 5700 XT – Setting Up
All external signs indicate that in working on the Radeon RX 5700 XT GAMING OC, GIGABYTE engineers focused on the functional elements of the design and saved on secondary and optional ones. In this, the new video card has much in common with accelerators based on NVIDIA chips, which GIGABYTE released one after the other in the last year. The first thing that attracts attention in the appearance of the GAMING OC is a massive cooling system with impellers with a diameter of 77 mm. The company uses the triple fan unit, which pumps air into the GPU heatsink, with minimal modifications in a wide range of devices, starting with the GeForce GTX 1660 and ending with the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. The side impellers rotate counterclockwise, and the central impeller rotates clockwise in order to reduce turbulence in the air flow.
Otherwise, the exterior of the GIGABYTE Radeon RX 5700 XT GAMING OC does not require a detailed description, because the board is devoid of any controls and additional connectors that can be useful when assembling and setting up the computer. There is not even a BIOS switch, which once was an integral feature of AMD-based video cards, although the main function that manufacturers usually assign to it – the quiet cooler mode – is active here initially: at low load the GPU cools passively, and the fans start only then. when the temperature exceeds 55 ° C.
Be that as it may, the Spartan design of the GAMING OC and the overall budget orientation of the video card did not stop equipping it with LED RGB lighting. And let only the company logo shine on the side of the case, its shade and pulsation mode can be set to your taste using the proprietary AORUS ENGINE utility (it is also used to configure other parameters – clock speeds, fan speeds, etc.).
The main thing that interests us in the design of the Radeon RX 5700 XT GAMING OC is located inside the casing of the cooling system. GIGABYTE installed a massive heatsink with six heat pipes with a diameter of 6 mm on the GPU, similar to the heat of Navi 10. At the same time, the part was designed according to a simplified scheme when flattened segments of the heat pipes directly contact the crystal. It’s immediately clear that the GAMING OC is not destined to become the first video card of the original design, which will reveal the full overclocking potential of the Radeon RX 5700 XT. After all, the automation that controls the power and clock speeds of the GPU in the new AMD accelerators focuses on the temperature of the hottest zone of the chip, and the rough base from the heat pipes pressed together clearly does not contribute to absolutely uniform heat dissipation.
However, the real claim for the Radeon RX 5700 XT GAMING OC device is related to the cooling of RAM. GDDR6 chips here also give heat to a common heatsink – this is welcome in itself, because a separate heatsink, which is preferred by designers of other video cards, must be massive enough to withstand the low airflow rate that is typical for large coolers with slow fans. And usually he doesn’t. The problem with the GIGABYTE accelerator is that the figured plate, which serves as a heat sink for RAM chips, is simply screwed to the base of the radiator and does not have full contact with heat pipes and fins. Fortunately, this flaw is compensated to some extent by a metal plate on the back of the PCB, covered with thermal pads in the area of RAM and voltage regulator.
Radeon RX 5700 XT – Printed circuit board
The power part of the Radeon RX 5700 XT GAMING OC circuit board in general follows the reference VRM. GIGABYTE uses a seven-phase voltage regulator to power the GPU core running the well-known Rectifier IR 35217 PWM controller, while the GDDR6 chips serve two keys and the ON Semiconductor NCP81022 chip. However, further differences can be found. For example, the designers of the reference boards were clearly not concerned with the economically feasible choice of components: the voltage regulator is excessively powerful, and even AMD did not spare integrated chips with a rated current of 70 A to power the RAM. Each developer of mass products should expect that VRM will be in one way or another degree truncated. So, instead of 70-amp keys, GIGABYTE opted for power stages SiC620A manufactured by Vishay Siliconix, designed for 60 A, although in this case, the current margin for the Radeon RX 5700 XT caliber graphics card is still huge. The main advantage of high-quality components is their efficiency, because the keys of the voltage regulator, RAM chips and the graphic processor Radeon RX 5700 XT GAMING OC live under a common radiator. Through-hole electrolytic capacitors as part of all voltage regulators that are on the board – this is another sign of the inevitable and justifiable savings on the cost of the accelerator.
GDDR6 RAM is equipped with Micron chips with a standard bandwidth of 14 Gb / s per contact. In the past, they demonstrated higher frequency potential compared to similar Samsung chips, which also fall into the Radeon RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT, but whatever the overclocking result this time, we note that the GDDR6 chips are interchangeable, and the manufacturer of the video card may Switch between Micron and Samsung, even within the same model.
