Renault has identified 20 projects in the blockchain

The automobile manufacturer Renault claims to work on technology blockchain since 2015. In total, the manufacturer has listed 20 projects to transform its operations and those of its ecosystem. The first achievements are coming soon.

IDC anticipates in 2020 a strong slowdown in blockchain projects in Europe due to the pandemic and the economic crisis triggered by it. Renault does not seem, however, to want to engage reverse gear in this area.

The industrialist thus presents blockchain as the "transformation vector for the future of the automotive industry. "The manufacturer also said to work on the implementation of this technology since 2015.

Collaborative and multi-business uses of blockchain

If the first blockchain projects were deployed in the world of finance, Renault therefore believes that this tool "promises efficiency, productivity and responsiveness gains for the automotive industry. "

The purpose of this technology is therefore firstly to allow "secure and certified network transactions between partner companies or between members of an ecosystem (a company and its customers or suppliers, for example). "

For Renault, blockchain use cases in the automotive sector must therefore be collaborative and multi-business. The use of blockchain could thus allow, for a customer, to certify information relating to the repair and maintenance of a vehicle during its resale.

More generally, Renault considers that the adoption of the blockchain must accompany the transformation of the automotive industry around the "electric, connected, autonomous and shared car. "

The first deployments "very soon"

The manufacturer announces that it has identified around twenty blockchain projects. These deployments relate in particular to the traceability of financial transactions and communication with equipment manufacturers and the sales network.

Renault points out that some of the blockchain uses identified in this way will be deployed "very soon. The manufacturer must, however, convince partners beforehand to join in his approach to set up an EVM, ie a Minimum Viable Ecosystem.

The benefits will not only be for the Renault Group but for the entire ecosystem of a project. The values are of course performance, increasing operational excellence, increasing responsiveness, but beyond that, trust inside and outside the ecosystem, "said Odile Panciatici, blockchain expert at Renault.

The French group is not the only one in the auto industry to be interested in blockchain. Several of its competitors have already launched initiatives and deployments in this sector. This is particularly the case of BMW in the supply chain or Toyota via the creation of Toyota Blockchain Lab.
