Without any presentation or detailed press release, AMD posted information on its website in May 2016 about the new AMD Radeon R7 M400 graphics cards designed for mobile devices. The R7 series includes five models at once M465X, M465, M460, M445 and M440. Unfortunately, AMD did not reinvent the wheel yet again, but renamed the existing solutions of the AMD Radeon R7 M300 line, having previously increased their path frequencies. We will consider the rebranding using the example of the Radeon R7 M460, which, compared to its predecessor, has increased its performance by about 10-15%. depending on the scenario.

The M400 series uses two graphics cores that are currently marketed under the Radeon M300 brand, Topaz XT and Bonaire XT. The Radeon R7 M460, unlike the older R7 M470 (Bonaire XT), is based on the Topaz XT architecture. The video card Radeon R7 M460, like its predecessor, has support for DirectX 12, Vulkan and FreeSync. The graphics core of the novelty operates at a relatively low clock frequency of 1100-1125 MHz, using a 64-bit DDR3 memory interface.

The R7 M460 video card will most likely compete with the Nvidia GeForce 930M, so the performance in gaming applications will be appropriate. It will be possible to play on a laptop with this video card only if the display resolution is set to 1366×768 pixels (HD), in old games to HD +, and the graphics quality will have to be downgraded to Low (low settings). As for high-tech resource-intensive games such as Mafia 3, Deus Ex Mankind Divided or Rise of the Tomb Raider, the R7 M460 simply won’t master them even at the lowest graphics settings. The FPS level in such games will be at the level of 10-15 cd. per second. With less voracious games such as Call of Duty Infinite Warfare, Titanfall 2 and GTA V, the graphics card coped. At HD resolution and low graphics settings, the FPS level maneuvered around 25-45 cd per second. We also note that this model has several features. For example, R7 M460 can decode MPEG-4 AVC / H.264, VC-1, MPEG-2, Flash, Multi-View Codec (MVC) and MPEG-4 part 2 (DivX, xVid) video, save energy thanks to support technologies ZeroCore, Power Gating. It also provides Enduro and Eyefinity functions. The built-in audio processor will transmit audio files via HDMI and DisplayPort (DTS TrueHD or Master Audio), and output it simultaneously from multiple devices thanks to DDMA support.

Testing

The performance of a video card is determined by the number of fps (frames per second) that it can produce in a particular application under certain settings. The performance of the video card in gaming applications is affected by the software installed on the PC, the version of the video driver, and the configuration of the computer.
