Unpacking

Starting with the packaging, the box design is the usual eye logo for the Gaming OC line. Apart from the usual information like RGB Fusion 2.0 support, 4-year warranty, Windforce cooling design, you won’t find much information on the front of the box, so you can flip it over to the back to learn about the product’s specifications and features. If we look at the design and information on the box, it is quite clear that Gigabyte is focusing on cooling design for its cards.

Design

Gigabyte has equipped the RTX 3070 Gaming OC 8G with a triple fan with their proprietary cooling fans, similar to the RTX 3090 Gaming OC 24G in terms of design, but with a more compact design and smaller fans. Of all Gigabyte Gaming OC series cards we’ve seen to date, this is definitely the nicest design so far – minimalist yet stylish design and of course very, very minimal RGB lighting on the card.

The cooler has a unique blade design that helps reduce air turbulence and improve acoustic performance, and a middle fan that rotates in the opposite direction to provide greater coverage and improved cooling performance. According to Gigabyte, the fans use Graphene nano lubricant, which provides longer fan life, close to dual ball bearing life, and lower noise levels.

Judging by its dimensions, the card has a height along the Z axis equal to 51 mm (it will take 2 slots and a little more) and a length of 286 mm. The heatsink has multiple heatpipes that are in direct contact with the GPU die to improve heat dissipation and achieve better cooling performance.

For those who still love some sort of RGB lighting in their system, the RTX 3070 Gaming OC 8G does have some RGB lighting on its Gigabyte logo. RGB lighting is enabled by default and can be configured using RGB Fusion 2.0 software. If you’re not a fan of RGB lighting, you can also turn it off completely using software.

The RTX 3070 Gaming OC 8G also has a grayish metal back that is very similar to the design of the RTX 3090 Gaming OC 24G. The notch on the near end of the rear panel acts similar to the cooling design of the RTX 30 Founders Edition cards, but we weren’t quite sure why Gigabyte calls this design “Screen Cooling”. This allows the cooling fan at the near end of the heatsink to channel heat to the top of the PC case, while the case fan (s) handles the rest.

In terms of power requirements, Gigabyte recommends a minimum 650W PSU and 2 8-pin PCIe power cables (or 1 6-pin and 1 8-pin) for the RTX 3070 Gaming OC 8G. The PCIe power connectors are very well placed for easier cabling and a cleaner look, much better than the current Founders Edition cards with the new 12-pin PCIe power connector that sits in the middle of the card and requires a dedicated adapter.

You will also find an on / off switch located on the back of the card to switch between OC mode and silent mode, depending on your preference. When running in OC mode by default, you can switch to silent mode if you prefer a quieter operation, but this requires a reboot. This design is also useful for those who want to try their own BIOS without risking completely blocking the card in the event of a BIOS flashing failure, since you will always have a backup BIOS.

In terms of display output, the RTX 3070 Gaming OC 8G has 2 DisplayPort 1.4 ports and 2 HDMI 2.1 ports. While not everyone has an 8K display at home, the additional HDMI ports will still come in handy for most users using monitors with HDMI ports.

1080p gaming is certainly not hard on both the RTX 3070 and RTX 2080 Ti, but looking at the 1080p gaming benchmark scores we can see that the RTX 3070 doesn’t quite outperform the RTX 2080 Ti, as some rumors have claimed. Those who prefer to play at 1080p.

Working temperature
I left the RTX 3070 Gaming OC 8G to run the FurMark stress test for a full day, and the highest recorded temperature was 71 ° C. Temperatures are slightly higher than the RTX 3090 Gaming OC 24G and RTX 3080 Eagle OC 10G, probably from – for their smaller size.

Despite the slightly higher temperature readings, the power consumption of the RTX 3070 Gaming OC 8G under heavy load is commendable. Compared to the RTX 2080 Ti, which draws about 340W under heavy load, the RTX 3070 only draws 272W here, which is actually pretty decent when we look at the fact that it runs pretty close to the RTX 2080 Ti.

Outcome
Now that we’ve compared the performance numbers, we can say that the RTX 3070 is not quite the RTX 2080 Ti as some have argued. Based on the numbers from the benchmark results, we can say that 1080p gaming feels more like a sweet spot for the RTX 3070.

The RTX 3070 is pretty much similar to the RTX 2080 in terms of performance, which offers performance very close to the RTX 2080 Ti, and not to mention that it is not as expensive as the more expensive RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 when it comes to up to power supply requirements. If you are already using a 650W PSU on your current system, it will be able to support the RTX 3070.
