Review NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER FE

Gaming Review: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER FE graphics card: even faster, but not more expensive – We continue our acquaintance with the updated series of NVIDIA video cards based on GPUs of the Turing family, and following the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER Founders Edition, today we will test the pre-flagship NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER Founders Edition . This model received a faster graphics processor and noticeably accelerated video memory, and also became even more attractive in visual terms.

At the same time, like other SUPER video cards from NVIDIA, the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER is offered for the same price as the regular GeForce RTX 2080 at the time of its release, and the latter (until it disappears from the market at all) has become more affordable at the price of a good set of RAM … Today we will tell you about the features of this video card, check its overclocking potential and test it in benchmarks and games.

1. Review of the video card NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER Founders Edition 8 GB

Specifications and Recommended Cost The
technical characteristics and cost of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER Founders Edition video card are shown in the table in comparison with the reference version of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 FE.

Packaging and equipment
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER Founders Edition comes in the same box as video cards without the SUPER prefix, just a corresponding inscription appeared on its sides, allowing you to identify the model (or rather, version) of the video card.

Separately, we note that the cardboard of the box is very dense and thick, and inside there is an additional shell made of a material resembling dense polyurethane foam. A video card is fixed in its center, additionally sealed in a film.

In other words, the video card is reliably protected from the unpleasant twists and turns of delivery and must reach its lucky owner safe and sound. The product accessories are packed in a small flat box inserted into a separate niche in the main box.

Among them are only two small instruction books and an adapter cable from DisplayPort to DVI-DL video output.

Unfortunately, there are no bonuses in the bundle. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER Founders Edition is available in China and comes with a proprietary 3-year warranty. This version of the video card can be bought directly from NVIDIA for 56,990 rubles, and if in the previous generation reference video cards were in less demand than the original models of NVIDIA partner companies, then with the release of the RTX 20xx the situation has changed. Currently, the demand for more than self-sufficient reference versions is very high, so you can only pre-order and no more than two pieces per hand.

PCB Design and Features
As you already know, the design of the new NVIDIA SUPER graphics cards has undergone very minimal changes. From visual differences on the front and back sides, an additional green SUPER inscription appeared, and the black insert between the fans was replaced by a chrome-plated and perfectly polished one.

Now the video card looks even more noble and attractive, and taking into account the increased efficiency of the cooling system, it has become much more difficult for the original models to compete with the reference versions. The dimensions of the video card are 267 × 102 × 39 mm, and it weighs a little less than one kilogram. On the front side are the same two cooling fans with thirteen blades each.

Above on the casing of the cooler of the video card, the inscription “GEFORCE RTX”, equipped with a green backlight, and two additional power connectors are displayed. There is nothing to mark on the bottom of the video card.

The mirrored surface between the fans reflects everything next to it.

Perhaps, here it would also be possible to equip the inscription with a backlight, since now cases with the possibility of vertical installation of video cards opposite the side panel made of tempered glass are gaining more and more popularity. The two familiar stickers on the back of the video card show the serial number and model number, as well as the country of production.

As for the set of video outputs, it has not undergone any changes: one HDMI 2.0b and three DisplayPort 1.4a.

In addition, the panel has a USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-C (VirtualLink) port for connecting virtual reality devices, which can also be used to charge mobile devices. There is nothing remarkable from the opposite end of the video card. On top of the video card, there are eight and six-pin power connectors.

The power consumption of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER Founders Edition can reach 250 watts, which is 25 watts higher than that of the non-SUPER graphics card of this model. Interestingly, the power supply requirements for a system with one such video card have not changed and are still the same 650 watts. Closer to the panel with outputs, there is a high-speed NVLink 2.0 interface connector with a bandwidth of 200 GB / s for combining two such video cards into a combination of amazing performance.

We did not have the opportunity to disassemble the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER Founders Edition, but we know that it is based on a GeForce RTX 2080 PCB with an eight-phase GPU power system and a uP9512 controller from uPI Semiconductor. Two more power phases are allocated for video memory and power circuits.

The graphics card is still based on the 12nm TU104-A1 GPU of the Turing architecture. However, in comparison with the usual GeForce RTX 2080, the SUPER version of the GPU is fully unlocked and has 3072 unified shader processors (ALU) versus 2944, 192 texture units versus 184 and the same 64 raster operations (ROP) units. At the same time, the base frequency of the GPU was increased from 1515 to 1650 MHz. And although the forced frequency of the SUPER version is only 15 MHz higher (1815 versus 1800 MHz), the bottom line of the GPU should get a noticeable boost in games and 3D benchmarks.

In the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER Founders Edition, NVIDIA did not limit itself to increasing the performance of the GPU, but equipped the new model of the video card with faster video memory chips. If the former GeForce RTX 2080 had GDDR6 chips with a theoretical effective frequency of 14 GHz and a bandwidth of 448 GB / s, then its updated version was endowed with chips with a theoretical effective frequency of 16 GHz. And even though they are clocked at 15.5 GHz on the video card, the bandwidth of such memory just barely reaches 500 GB / s and is 11% higher than that of the GeForce RTX 2080. Not bad for the same money, isn’t it? Let’s not forget that the new memory microcircuits are also perfectly overclocked, as we will see with you today.

We will provide the full specifications of the reference version of the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER Founders Edition using the GPU-Z utility.

Cooling System
Unlike the GPU and video memory, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER Founders Edition cooling system has not changed. We talked about it in detail in the article about NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Founders Edition , so today we will immediately move on to testing. We used the Fire Strike Extreme stress test from the latest version of the 3DMark graphics package to test the temperature regime of the video card as a load.

To monitor temperatures and all other parameters, we used MSI Afterburner version 4.6.2 Beta 2 and GPU-Z utility version 2.24.0. The tests were carried out in a closed case of the system unit , the configuration of which you can see in the next section of the article, at a room temperature of about 24.5 degrees Celsius. First of all, we checked the temperature regime of the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER Founders Edition when automatically adjusting the fan speed of its cooler.

Automatic mode (1490 ~ 2120 rpm, 2 pcs.)

If we draw parallels with the tested in the same conditionsGeForce RTX 2080 Founders Edition, then we can say that the SUPER version has practically no changes in temperature: the maximum GPU temperature increased only to 78 degrees Celsius at the same maximum fan speed. The GPU frequency stabilized at 1905 MHz, which is 30 MHz higher than the regular RTX 2080 version. The difference is small, but remember that the GeForce RTX 2080 GPU is accelerated not only by the frequency. It should be noted that even graphics cards that are absolutely identical in terms of the printed circuit board and cooling system can heat up in different ways, since the crystals of their graphics processors can have different levels of operating voltages. And yet, in general, today we once again made sure that

If the temperature mode of the video card does not suit someone with automatic fan speed control, then you can manually set them to the maximum speed and reduce the GPU temperature in 3D mode by 14 degrees Celsius.

Maximum speed (~ 3720 rpm, 2 pcs.)

In addition, the frequency of the GPU stabilized at a higher mark of 1935 MHz, that is, a cooled video card is better able to demonstrate slightly higher performance than in automatic mode. True, here it is worth remembering that the noise level will be very high.

Overclocking potential
First, we checked the overclocking potential of the video card’s GPU using the automatic selection of the maximum frequency of the GPU in MSI Afterburner version 4.6.2 Beta 2. Before launching the scanner, the power and temperature limits were increased to the maximum possible, and the cooling fans functioned automatically. mode. Here’s what happened in the end.

Apparently, the scanner checks the graphics processor extremely meticulously, reporting in the end about only +36 MHz to the base frequency. Of course, this situation did not suit us, so then we moved on to checking the overclocking of the video card in manual mode. After a couple of hours of continuous testing, the base frequency of the GPU was raised by 130 MHz (+ 7.9%) without loss of stability and the appearance of image defects , and the effective video memory frequency – by a record 2860 MHz (+ 18.5%)!

As a result, the frequencies of the overclocked video card were 1780-1945 / 18360 MHz.

I was especially impressed by the video memory, overclocking which allowed to raise its bandwidth by almost 100 GB / s with a record 587.5 GB / s. But the graphics processor of our NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER Founders Edition did not disappoint, working at a stable 2025 MHz after overclocking.

Automatic mode (1490-2190 rpm, 2 pcs.)

And one more certainly pleasant fact is that the peak temperature of the GPU of the overclocked video card has increased by only two degrees Celsius, and the maximum speed of the cooler fans during automatic adjustment has increased by only 70 rpm.

2. Test configuration, tools and testing methodology

The video cards were tested in a closed system case on the following hardware configuration:

To reduce the dependence of the performance of video cards on the platform speed, a 14-nm ten-core processor with a multiplier of 44 , a reference frequency of 100 MHz and the Load-Line Calibration function activated at the highest level, was overclocked to 4.4 GHz when the voltage in the motherboard BIOS was raised to 1.119 V.

In turn, 16 gigabytes of DDR4 RAM operated in four- channel mode at 3.2 GHz with main timings 15-16-16-32 CR1 at 1.35 V and adjusting individual secondary timings. The performance of the SUPER version of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Founders Edition will be comparable to its predecessor, as well as to the original model Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER Gaming OC, which has a GPU frequency 30 MHz higher in forced mode.

In addition, the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER Gaming OC and the younger NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER Founders Edition have been added to testing at their nominal frequencies.

Let us add that the power and temperature limits on all video cards were increased to the maximum possible, and in the GeForce drivers, instead of optimal power consumption, the priority was set to maximum performance. Video cards based on AMD graphics processors are not included in the tests for a banal reason for their absence, and not for some political or personal reasons. Testing, which began on September 21, 2019, was carried out under the operating system Microsoft Windows 10 Pro 1903 with all updates as of the specified date and with the installation of the following drivers: motherboard chipset Intel Chipset Drivers – 10.1.18121.8164 WHQL dated 08/13/2019; Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) – 1924.14.0.1295 WHQL from 21.09.2019;

drivers for video cards on NVIDIA graphics processors – GeForce 436.15 WHQL from 08/27/2019;

In today’s testing, we only used 2560 x 1440 pixels. Two graphics quality modes were used for the tests: “Quality + AF16x” – the quality of textures in the drivers by default with anisotropic filtering at 16x and “Quality + AF16x + MSAA 4x” with anisotropic filtering at 16x and full-screen anti-aliasing using the MSAA algorithm of degree 4x … In some games, due to the specifics of their game engines, other anti-aliasing algorithms were used, which will be indicated later in the methodology. Anisotropic filtering and full-screen anti-aliasing was enabled in the game settings. If these settings were absent in games, then the parameters were changed in the control panel of the GeForce drivers. V-Sync was also forcibly disabled there. In addition to the above,

The video cards have been tested in two graphics tests and fifteen games, updated to the latest versions as of the date of the publication. Let’s add that if the games have implemented the ability to fix the minimum number of frames per second, then it was also shown in the diagrams. Each test was carried out twice, the best of the two obtained values was taken as the final result, but only if the difference between them did not exceed 1%. If the deviations of the benchmark runs exceeded 1%, then the testing was repeated at least one more time to get a reliable result.

We will analyze the results using summary diagrams.

4. Summary charts and analysis of results

In the first pivot chart based on average FPS in games, we compare the performance of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER Founders Edition with the regular GeForce RTX 2080 at their nominal frequencies. The results of the last video card are taken as the zero axis, and the SUPER-version indicators are reflected in percentage deviations from it.

Frankly, we expected an even smaller increase (in the region of 3-3.5%), but according to our data, on average for all 15 games, the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER is ahead of the regular GeForce RTX 2080 by 5.0% in modes without anti-aliasing and by 5 , 4% when activating its various techniques. The minimum gain is 1.1% in Tom Clancy’s The Division 2, and the maximum is 11.1% in HITMAN 2. This is not bad, especially considering that the cost of the new video card has not increased compared to its predecessor. Next, let’s evaluate the advantage of the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER Founders Edition over the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER performed by Gigabyte, whose GPU frequency is only 45 MHz higher than the reference, so we can say that we are comparing two reference video cards.

But here, on the contrary – with a difference in the recommended cost of 17 thousand rubles or + 42.5% to the price of GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER, we expected a more noticeable increase in performance. However, it was only 10.0% in modes without anti-aliasing and 11.5% when activated. Therefore, we still consider the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER the most profitable graphics card from the updated NVIDIA lineup (especially after overclocking). We add that the minimum advantage of the RTX 2080 SUPER is 3.3% in the Assassin’s Creed Odyssey game, and the maximum reaches 24.5% in the most resource-intensive Metro Exodus game mode. Now let’s see how the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER is faster than the GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER, which is close to the title of “popular” video card.

On average, for all 15 games, the pre-top NVIDIA video card is almost twice as fast as the cheaper GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER by 30.3% without anti-aliasing and by 32.3% when it is turned on. In the last summary chart, we propose to evaluate the performance gain from overclocking the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER. Recall that our graphics processor overclocked by almost 8%, and the video memory – by an impressive 18.5%.

This overclocking of the reference video card brings it an additional 6.7% without AA and 6.9% with AA enabled. The performance of the true flagship GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, of course, will not work, but on the whole we are satisfied with both today’s overclocking results for NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER Founders Edition and the performance gain.

5. Power consumption

To measure the power consumption of video cards, we used the NVIDIA FrameView utility , from the logs of which, for each tested video card, the diagram shows the minimum power consumption of the graphics processor (GPUOnlyPower (W)) and its maximum value, as well as the maximum power consumption of the entire video card (TotalPower (W)) … For the load in this test, we used two consecutive cycles of the HITMAN 2 game benchmark at 2560 × 1440 pixels with maximum graphics quality settings and anti-aliasing enabled. Recall that on all video cards the power and temperature limits have been increased to the maximum possible, and let’s look at the results.

The peak power consumption level of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER Founders Edition at nominal frequencies turned out to be 37 watts higher than the 250 watts declared in the specifications, and when overclocked, it even exceeds the 300 watts limit. Nevertheless, the original version of the same model of the Gigabyte video card has an even higher power consumption level and reaches 310 watts. As for the comparison with the previous model GeForce RTX 2080 (not SUPER), the difference in peak power consumption is only 6 watts, but in terms of power consumption only for the GPU, the regular GeForce RTX 2080 turned out to be even better than the updated model. We add that the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER consumes 41 watts less, the RTX 2080 SUPER, and the RTX 2060 SUPER more than 100 watts less, keeping within the modest 182 watts.

Outcomes

NVIDIA company has easily and very quickly strengthened its position in the 3D graphics market by updating the GeForce RTX series of video cards. But if the “restyling” of the GeForce RTX 2060 and RTX 2070 was vital in connection with the release of competing video cards based on AMD GPUs, then nothing threatened the usual GeForce RTX 2080, so its upgrade to the SUPER version was more of an image, well, or for in order to make a complete update of all three gaming models (GeForce RTX 2080 Ti stands alone).

We can say that, as with the two lower-end graphics cards, the SUPER version of the GeForce RTX 2080 is a success. It has become 5% faster, while maintaining the same operating temperature and noise level, and the level of power consumption of the video card has increased slightly. At the same time, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER Founders Edition is offered for the same price as its predecessor, so there is no question of choosing between them at all (especially since it will soon disappear from the market altogether). In addition, the SUPER graphics card design has become even more interesting and attractive. The only pity is that she did not have a worthy competitor, and does not. However, this is not NVIDIA’s problem at all.
