There is no doubt that the Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti is a high-performance beast, clocked at 1480MHz and 1582MHz under load.
True, the original GTX 1080 overclocks to 1733 MHz, however, the Ti model works with more cores and video memory, which improves the card’s performance in tests and real games.
GeForce GTX 1080 Ti – Design and cooling
If you’ve seen one Pascal graphics card from Nvidia you’ve seen them all. Externally, the original GeForce GTX 1080 and Nvidia’s latest Ti are virtually indistinguishable.
Not that we are complaining. The design of the original Nvidia Founders Edition cards was a hit when it first debuted in a modern, angular and futuristic style. One small change that users may have noticed is the lack of DVI. Don’t worry about it, the GTX 1080 Ti comes with an adapter that you can plug into DisplayPort.
Removing the DVI port opens up new possibilities for better cooling. In fact, Nvidia claims that the new air cooling system provides twice the airflow area of the original GeForce GTX 1080.
And our tests prove these promises. Even under full load, the GTX 1080 Ti stayed colder than 75 degrees Celsius, while the GTX 1080 peaked at 82 degrees Celsius. Of course, you can warm up both cards to the 91-degree Celsius limit by adjusting the power limit and overclocking the GPUs.
GeForce GTX 1080 Ti – Performance
4K gaming at 60 FPS with a single graphics card has long been a promised land for gamers, and the Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti is the closest example of this. The silky smooth gaming experience in Ulta HD depends a lot on what games you play.
We managed to hit 50-60 frames per second in games like Battlefield 1 and Doom. It’s not just a feat – this pair of games is also one of the most streamlined games out there.
Additionally, Nvidia released a DirectX 12-optimized Game Ready Driver that helped us run Rise of the Tomb Raider at a solid 40fps, which is not far off the Titan X’s 57fps performance, and also doubled 20fps. GTX 1080.
These are the best scenarios available, you shouldn’t assume that the Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti is becoming a bulletproof 4K gaming solution. Total War: Attila brought Titan’s GPU to its knees, the graphics card struggling to squeeze out 26 frames per second.
When we came to benchmarking pure 3DMark: Fire Strike Ultra performance, the GTX 1080 Ti completely crushed its ancestor with a margin of 2,000 to 4,000 points across the board. Much more impressive is the fact that the latest GeForce beat the Titan X as well.
Most mind-boggling is the fact that the Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti does all this without any overclocking. Nvidia claims that the graphics card can squeeze out 2 GHz, and while we haven’t overclocked the new graphics card, it was stable in the 1.7-1.8 GHz range.
GTX 1080 Ti – Final thoughts ( Should I buy?)
From start to finish, this is the most impressive Nvidia graphics card to date. It is surprisingly more powerful than the original GTX 1080, coming close to the performance of the Titan X. You also see one of Nvidia’s most overclocked cards with huge overclocking potential.
If you yearn for the best graphics cards from Nvidia but can’t afford $ 1,200 (£ 78,000), then the new Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti looks a lot nicer for its $ 699 (£ 45,000).
