Review Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super JetStream Gaming

Review and testing of the Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super JetStream video card: candidate # 1: Overclocking | MSI Afterburner version 4.6.0 beta 9 and GPU-Z utility version 2.15.0 and other releveant information that you would be interested in.

Introduction

Following the GeForce RTX 2080and the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, NVIDIA has recently introduced at the moment already a mid-range model in the family of video cards based on Turing GPUs – the GeForce RTX 2070 (the youngest is now the GeForce RTX 2060).

Based on the GPU TU106, released according to the 12 FinFET process, the novelty in terms of its manufacturability is located exactly between the GeForce GTX 1080 and the GeForce GTX 1070, but due to the use of high-frequency GDDR6, it has a significantly higher memory bandwidth (even without taking into account the advanced compression algorithms).

But at the recommended cost, the GeForce RTX 2070 is equal to the GeForce GTX 1080, which in recent months has noticeably lost in price and is gradually leaving the market. It will be all the more interesting to look at the confrontation, so to speak, between the pre-flagship of the previous generation and the middle peasant from the current generation.

Well, today the Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super JetStream video card with a factory overclocked GPU and a powerful cooler will defend the position of the younger Turing today .

Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super JetStream 8 GB video card review

Technical characteristics and recommended cost Technical characteristics and cost of the Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super JetStream video card are shown in the table in comparison with the reference versions NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 (FE), GeForce GTX 1080, GeForce GTX 1070 Ti and GeForce GTX 1070.

Packaging and equipment Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super JetStream comes in a very beautiful box, on the front side of which there is an image of a thunderstorm with lightning, apparently hinting at the very high performance of the video card.

There you can also find out the amount of memory, model name and support for NVIDIA technologies. Everything is the same, but in a slightly more expanded format, it is shown on the back of the box in several languages, including Russian.

From the sticker on the end of the box, we find out that the product is made in China and we will see the batch number with the serial number of the video card.

Inside the colored box there is another one – made of thick black cardboard, and already in it, in two shells made of foamed polyethylene, Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super JetStream is fixed. Above, in a small compartment, there are instructions and a disk with drivers and utilities.

Nothing else comes with the video card.

It seems that the times of pleasant bonuses in bundles have finally sunk into oblivion even with rather expensive video cards, and not only with budget models. We add that Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super JetStream is provided with a proprietary three-year warranty, and its cost in Russian stores starts at 42 thousand rubles. PCB design and features

The design of Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super JetStream cannot be called pretentious and this, in our opinion, is the most important moment in the appearance of a video card, since the latest trends in the design of top-end video cards are not at all pleasing. A riot of colors, all sorts of plastic linings and ruffles, coupled with disco lighting, significantly underestimate the seriousness of such products and devalues the very attitude towards them. However, this is, of course, a subjective moment: someone is delighted with all these toy bells and whistles, and someone, in turn, rejoices at the high cooling efficiency with the possibility of maximum overclocking and silent operation at the same time. As they say, to each his own.

Palit designers have found that golden mean, when the video card cannot be called boring in any way, but at the same time it does not repel with the overload of the design and flickering of colors. The corrugated casing of the cooling system and two fans with unusually curved matte TurboFan Blade 2.0 blades cover its entire front side, and the back is almost completely covered with a metal plate, which not only performs a protective function, but also acts as a heat spreader for the elements of the VRM zone. Above and below, the casing also partially covers the radiator, but still most of it is not blocked to remove heated air.

Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super JetStream is not so much a long video card (297 mm) as thick, since its thickness is 60 mm. In other words, goodbye to the two adjacent PCI-Express slots on the motherboard, as well as cramped mini-ITX cases. With the height of the video card, everything is fine – 120 mm, and it weighs 1333 grams. Also note that the name of the series is given on the top of the video card casing – JetStream. There is no backlight in this area of the casing.

On the top end of the video card, two power connectors are soldered: six- and eight-pin.

If the GeForce RTX 2080 has a power consumption level of 215 watts, then here it should not exceed 180 watts, and the power supply for a system with one such video card should be at least 500 watts. That is, the requirements are quite ordinary by modern standards. But the connector for the new high-speed NVLink 2.0 interface for combining a pair of video cards in SLI mode is absent on all GeForce RTX 2070s. This is now the exclusive prerogative of NVIDIA flagship solutions. The set of video outputs is standard for this video card model: one HDMI version 2.0b and three DisplayPort version 1.4. They are complemented by a USB 3.1 Gen2 port, which supports the connection of virtual reality devices.

All ports occupy no more than a quarter of the interface panel, the rest of it is perforated with holes in the form of honeycombs for partial outflow of heated air outside the system case. Nothing interesting can be noted from the opposite end of the video card. In the upper corner of the PCB near the video outputs there is a small BIOS switch.

At the same time, the main and backup BIOS versions have different frequencies and different consumption limits. In addition, in the redundant version of the microcode, semi-passive cooling with complete stop of fans in idle or minimum load modes. Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super JetStream is based on a proprietary PCB. Its layout resembles the design of the reference NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080, but there are no unsoldered elements on the PCB.

The ten-phase power system consists of DrMOS assemblies, where eight phases are allocated to provide power to the GPU and two more to video memory.

Power management is provided by two NCP81610 controllers , one of which is soldered on the front side of the PCB, and the other on the back.

Another microcircuit on the PCB – Holtek HT32F52241 – is responsible for monitoring and controlling the video card.

Moving on to the Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super JetStream GPU, we note that there is a plastic protective frame around its perimeter, the presence of which minimizes the risk of damage to the fragile crystal when removing / installing the cooling system. Not all video cards have such frames, so Palit wins here, which is especially important for enthusiastic overclockers who often change thermal interfaces and cooling systems.

The TU106-400-A1 graphics processor of the Turing architecture on our video card sample was released on week 39 of 2018 (end of September) according to the 12-nm FinFET process and has a crystal area of 445 mm2, and the approximate number of transistors is 10.8 billion. that the factory-overclocked versions (GameRock, Super JetStream and GameRock Premium) use TU106-400A GPUs supplied for factory-overclocked video cards, while versions with nominal frequencies (JetStream only) may also have TU106- 400 factory overclocked. We add that this GPU has 21.7% fewer unified shader processors than the TU104 (GeForce RTX 2080) and the same number of texture units (144 versus 184), and the declared ray tracing speed is 6 Gray / s versus 8 Gray / s.

The base GPU frequency in 3D mode is equal to the reference one and amounts to 1410 MHz, but in forced mode it can increase to 1620 MHz on the backup BIOS and up to 1740 MHz on the main BIOS, which is 30 MHz higher than that of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 FE . Despite the specified frequencies, according to the monitoring data, the GPU frequency of our video card briefly increased to 1950 MHz, and then stabilized at 1920 MHz, which is much higher. Let’s add that when switching to 2D mode, the GPU frequency drops to 300 MHz, while the voltage drops from 1.050 V to 0.725 V (this value may differ on each video card).

If the graphics processor GeForce RTX 2070 is noticeably simplified compared to the GeForce RTX 2080, then there is no difference in video memory. The video card is equipped with eight gigabytes of GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit bus. In Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super JetStream we see K4Z80325BC-HC14 chips from Samsung Semiconductor.

The theoretical effective frequency of such microcircuits is 14 GHz, which will provide the video card with a bandwidth of up to 448 GB / s. When switching to 2D mode, the memory frequency drops to 810 MHz. In general, the GPU-Z utility will demonstrate the characteristics of the Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super JetStream.

At the end of the review of the hardware part of the video card, we will provide a link to its main BIOS and move on to analyzing the cooling system. Cooling system As we recall, the reference versions of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti and GeForce RTX 2080/2070 are equipped with a new air cooling system with a high level of efficiency and reduced noise level (when compared with the references of the previous generation). Therefore, now manufacturers of original video cards will have to work very hard to make their products more attractive, and not only due to the backlight. Nevertheless, this did not bother Palit at all, as the company has once again improved its coolers, making them even more efficient and even quieter. Take a look at the Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super JetStream cooling system layout.

The cooler is not only massive, but also heavy, since its radiator consists of a very dense package of aluminum fins and has five heat pipes with a diameter of 8 mm in its arsenal.

The radiator consists of a copper base and two sections pierced with heat pipes. The density of the ribs is such that the distance between the plates is barely more than 1 mm.

This made it possible to create a radiator of a large area, but with a rib thickness of almost 30 mm, it will not be easy to blow through such a “package”.

It should be noted that soldering is used in all places where heat pipes and radiator fins are mated.

To cool the radiator, there are two 95mm fan impellers with the original TurboFan Blade 2.0 blades, which provide higher airflow and pressure.

They are installed in a plastic frame, where they are fixed on three racks each.

The fans are based on 6-pole electric motors with 30% less energy consumption. In addition, the use of such a motor made it possible to reduce the stator diameter and thereby increase the useful area of the impellers by 10%.

The rotational speed of the fans is automatically controlled by the video card by pulse-width modulation and, according to monitoring data, can vary in the range from 0 to 2720 rpm. You can configure the fans using the proprietary ThunderMaster utility .

It also provides monitoring of all parameters of the video card.

In addition, the utility will help to overclock the graphics processor and video memory.

The bonus is the setting of the backlight.

On the Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super JetStream, the backlighting is built into the top and back of the casing and looks pretty interesting.

To check the temperature regime of the video card as a load, we used eleven cycles of the Time Spy Extreme stress test from the 3DMark graphics package.

To monitor temperatures and all other parameters, MSI Afterburner version 4.6.0 beta 9 and GPU-Z utility version 2.15.0 and newer were used. The tests were carried out in a closed case of the system unit, the configuration of which you can see in the next section of the article, at a room temperature of about 25 degrees Celsius. First, let’s see how the Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super JetStream cooling system copes with cooling the video card in automatic fan mode.

Automatic mode (280-1420 rpm)

The result is impressive! The temperature of the graphics processor of the video card, working for a minute, at 1920 MHz, increased only to 66-67 degrees Celsius and stabilized at this level. But the most interesting thing is that the speed of the video card fans only rose to 1420 rpm and then did not increase either. In this mode, the video card remained comfortable in terms of noise level against the background of a working system unit, which is important for many users. It is quite possible to summarize that Palit has once again made a very, very effective cooler, which does not annoy users with unnecessary noise. Let’s fantasize about “cooling efficiency is never too much” and turn the fan speed to maximum.

Maximum speed (~ 2720 rpm)

As you can see, at the maximum speed of the two fans, the GPU temperature dropped to 58-59 degrees Celsius, which is an outstanding result for a GeForce RTX 2070-level video card. By the way, please note that as the temperatures dropped, the video card began to operate at slightly higher frequencies. Of course, the noise level at this fan speed goes beyond all comfort limits. By the way, we measured it in the entire speed range of the fans, but the results will be given in the following articles, when we have the opportunity to compare them with the noise level of coolers of other models. Overclocking potential

We started testing the overclocking potential of the Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super JetStream video card using an automatic GPU frequency scanner in MSI Afterburner. The utility, which is irreplaceable in its functionality, helped to determine that 109 MHz can be added to the frequency of the GPU without increasing the voltage and temperatures.

However, unfortunately, at this GPU frequency, the video card was not stable in all tests, so we had to determine the GPU limit manually. After a couple of hours of tests, we found out that the graphics processor of the video card is capable of overclocking only at 85 MHz (+ 6%) in the core and at 1670 MHz (+ 11.9%) in the video memory.

As a result, the frequencies of the overclocked video card were 1495-1825 / 15672 MHz.

The maximum frequency of the graphics processor of the overclocked video card reached 2040 MHz, and then stabilized at 2010 MHz during testing. At the same time, we did not resort to manual adjustment of the rotational speed of the cooler fans and got the following temperature regime.

Automatic mode (0-1660 rpm)

The GPU temperature of the overclocked video card has risen to 72 degrees Celsius, and the fan speed with automatic adjustment has increased to 1660 rpm. In general, the overclocking of the video card cannot be called outstanding, but the temperature regime of the video card and its noise level will still suit most users.

Test configuration, tools and testing methodology

The video cards were tested in a closed system case on the following hardware configuration: motherboard: ASUS ROG Strix X299-E Gaming (Intel X299 Express, LGA2066, BIOS 1602 dated 11/30/2018); central processor: Intel Core i9-7900X 3.3-4.5 GHz (Skylake-X, 14 nm, U0, 10 x 1024 KB L2, 13.75 MB L3, TDP 140 W); CPU cooling system: Phanteks PH-TC14PЕ (2 x Corsair AF140, 760 ~ 1090 rpm); thermal interface: ARCTIC MX-4 (8.5 W / (mK); RAM: DDR4 4 x 4 GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 2800 MHz (CMK16GX4M4A2800C16) (XMP 2800 MHz / 16-18-18-36_2T / 1.2 V or 3000 MHz / 16-18-18-36_2T / 1.35 V); video cards: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Founders Edition 8 GB / 256 bit, 1515-1800 (1965) / 14000 MHz;

To reduce the dependence of the performance of video cards on the platform speed, a 14-nm ten-core processor with a multiplier of 44, a reference frequency of 100 MHz and the Load-Line Calibration function activated to the fifth level was overclocked to 4.4 GHz when the voltage in the motherboard BIOS was increased to 1.114 V.

At the same time, 16 gigabytes of DDR4 RAM operated in four-channel mode at a frequency of 2.933 GHz with the main timings of 15-16-16-32 CR1 at a voltage of 1.33 V. To assess the performance of the Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super JetStream, four more video cards are included in today’s testing. The upper performance bar will be set by the reference NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Founders Edition, and the direct competitor will be the GeForce GTX 1080 in the performance of the original version of Gigabyte with slightly increased frequencies.

The reference NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti and the original Inno3D GeForce GTX 1070 HerculeZ Twin X2 at their nominal frequencies will help you evaluate the advantages of the GeForce RTX 2070 over the previous generation video cards it replaces.

Once again, we cannot compare with video cards based on AMD graphics processors, since they are not provided to us for testing. Let us add that the power and temperature limits on all video cards were increased to the maximum possible, and in the GeForce drivers, instead of optimal power consumption, the priority was set to maximum performance. Testing, which began on December 16, 2018, was carried out under the operating system Microsoft Windows 10 Pro (1803 17134.472) with all updates as of the specified date and with the installation of the following drivers: motherboard chipset Intel Chipset Drivers – 10.1.17861.8101 WHQL dated 12/10/2018; Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) – 12.0.1168 WHQL dated 12/18/2018;

drivers for video cards on NVIDIA GPUs – GeForce 417.35 WHQL from 12/12/2018.

In today’s testing, we only used 2560 x 1440 pixels. Two graphics quality modes were used for the tests: Quality + AF16x – texture quality in the drivers by default with anisotropic filtering at 16x and Quality + AF16x + MSAA 4x with anisotropic filtering at 16x and full-screen anti-aliasing using the MSAA algorithm of degree 4x. In some games, due to the specifics of their game engines, other anti-aliasing algorithms were used, which will be indicated later in the methodology and directly on the diagrams with the results. Anisotropic filtering and full-screen anti-aliasing was enabled in the game settings. If these settings were absent in games, then the parameters were changed in the control panel of the GeForce drivers. V-Sync was also forcibly disabled there.

The video cards have been tested in two graphics tests and fifteen games, updated to the latest versions as of the date of the publication. In comparison with our previous article on testing video cards, there was only one change in the test set: Assassin’s Creed: Origins was replaced by Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. The current list of test applications is as follows (games and further test results in them are arranged in the order of their official release): 3DMark (DirectX 9/11/12) – version 2.6.6174, testing in the scenes of Fire Strike, Fire Strike Extreme, Fire Strike Ultra and Time Spy (the graph shows a graphical score); Unigine Superposition (DirectX 11) – version 1.0, tested in 1080P High, 1080P Extreme and 4K Optimized settings

Let’s add that if the games have implemented the ability to fix the minimum number of frames per second, then it was also shown in the diagrams. Each test was carried out twice, the best of the two obtained values was taken as the final result, but only if the difference between them did not exceed 1%. If the deviations of the benchmark runs exceeded 1%, then the testing was repeated at least one more time to get a reliable result.

We will analyze the results using summary diagrams.

Pivot charts and analysis of results

According to the video card model indices, it would be logical to compare the new GeForce RTX 2070 with the GeForce GTX 1070, although, of course, these video cards differ drastically in cost now, and the price recommended by NVIDIA at the time of the announcements of these video cards also increased ($ 499 versus $ 399). Nevertheless, to assess the progress, we suggest comparing the performance of Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super JetStream and Inno3D GeForce GTX 1070 HerculeZ Twin X2 at nominal frequencies. The results of the last video card are taken as the zero axis, and the performance of the new GeForce RTX 2070 is shown as a percentage increase from it.

The progress is impressive, isn’t it? The maximum values can reach 65-68% or 54-55%, and on average for all games, the new GeForce RTX 2070 is 38.4% faster than the GeForce GTX 1070 in modes without anti-aliasing and by 42.1% when its various methods are activated. The only pity is that such gains are now accompanied by a noticeable increase in the cost of video cards. Next, let’s try to put up a more serious opponent against Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super JetStream: GeForce GTX 1080 represented by the original Gigabyte video card. However, even here the novelty did not hesitate, beating the competitor in the overwhelming majority of games.

As you can see, only in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III and Forza Horizon 4 Demo, as well as in one Hitman mode, we do not see any difference between these video cards, and in all other games the advantage of the GeForce RTX 2070 is obvious. Moreover, here you can no longer blame the difference in cost, because when both models of video cards were announced, it was the same, and the current market price of these video cards is still in favor of the new model. We summarize that at a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels, on average for all games, the GeForce RTX 2070 is faster than the GeForce GTX 1080 by 9.9% in modes without anti-aliasing and by 12.9% when it is activated.

Perhaps the most interesting summary chart will be the comparison of the GeForce RTX 2070 represented by the Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super JetStream video card with the fast NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Founders Edition. It is clear that the heroine of today’s testing will lag behind, but the question is – how much? We answer.

Not that much, to be honest. The maximum difference is visible in Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands and reaches 21-22%, and the minimum in Grand Theft Auto V, where the GeForce GTX 2070 is 7-9% slower. If we calculate the average lag for all 15 games, then it is approximately 13%. Just here it will be appropriate to recall the price difference between these video cards, namely, that the GeForce RTX 2080 costs more than $ 200 more. That is, by buying a GeForce RTX 2070 instead of an RTX 2080, you can save 25% (29% for the FE version) and at the same time lose only 13% in performance. Isn’t it a benefit?

Moreover, if you overclock the GeForce RTX 2070, then this lag can be noticeably reduced. And even though our sample Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super JetStream overclocked to the core is not very successful, but the effect is still there, which will be confirmed by the final summary diagram.

Having overclocked the GPU by 6%, and the video memory by 11.9%, we increased the performance of the Palit video card on average in all 15 games by 5.7-6.4%, that is, we reduced the gap with the GeForce RTX 2080 FE by exactly half. Of course, the flagship video card is also overclocked, but the fact that you can almost get the performance of the nominal GeForce RTX 2080 from a successful GeForce RTX 2070 is good news.

Energy consumption

The energy consumption was measured using a Corsair AX1500i power supply via the Corsair Link interface and the HWiNFO64 monitoring utility version 5.91-3555. The energy consumption of the entire system as a whole was measured without taking into account the monitor. Testing was carried out in 2D mode with normal work in Microsoft Word or Internet surfing, as well as in 3D mode. In the latter case, the load was created using two successive test cycles of the Call of Duty: WWII game according to our method in a resolution of 2560 × 1440 pixels with maximum graphics quality settings using anti-aliasing. CPU power saving technologies are disabled in the motherboard BIOS.

Let’s compare the level of power consumption of systems with the video cards tested today according to the results in the diagram.

In terms of power consumption, the system with the Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super JetStream is exactly between the configurations with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Founders Edition and the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 G1 Gaming with a peak level of total power consumption of 515 watts. When overclocking a video card, this value rises to 528 watts. Thus, we can say that a modern system with a fairly productive video card fits well into a power supply unit with a real output power of 550-600 watts.

Conclusion

Based on the results of today’s review and testing, we are ready to call the Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super JetStream an impeccable video card, which is the No. 1 candidate for purchase among the RTX 2070. It has a very high level of performance initially, surpassing the GeForce GTX 1080, and even with modest overclocking it comes close to GeForce RTX 2080 FE. It is very important that for this the video card does not need to get very hot and puff like a vacuum cleaner. Its cooling system copes with the heat dissipation of the GPU and its power harness perfectly, while the noise level in any 3D mode remains low.

Nice design, adjustable backlighting, dual BIOS and 3-year warranty – everything is great. Perhaps only the increased thickness of the video card and the global increase in the cost of all products of the new RTX series from NVIDIA can prevent you from choosing this particular video card model. Otherwise, the Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super JetStream is the top choice for a gaming graphics card in the upper price segment.
