RTX 2080 Ti in two variants, i.e. the secret of the TU102-300-A cores

It looks like everyone will have to ask themselves the same question after buying the new GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. “A” or not “A”? Nvidia decided to small segregate the cores used there, deciding to designate TU102-300 and TU102-300-A. What does it mean?

For this discovery, we have to thank the TechPowerUp service, which noticed a certain correctness and, after consulting with the manufacturers, confirmed that Nvidia segregates GPUs going to RTX 2080 Ti cards. However, this is not what we compare to the “silicon lottery” in the case of processors. The company decided to divide the cores into two types of different quality, which translates into thermal efficiency and, of course, the OC potential. It is he who is probably the main reason that pushed Nvidia to such segregation. The cores of TU102 are divided into two groups …

We can distinguish them by the code name itself. The TU102-300-A will be the “better” GPU sort, while the TU102-300 will still meet the standards of quality control and stability, but (usually) nothing else. In other words, the cores marked with the letter “A” will be on board the models overclocked by the manufacturer, and those without (correspondingly cheaper) will go to the proprietary models of partners who will not even be able to slightly raise the clocks. Of course, in both cases the user himself will be able to push the RTX 2080 Ti even further. However, in the case of cores not marked with the letter “A” it will not be as effective.

Interestingly, Nvidia has equipped its Founders Edition GPU TU102-300-A models for a reason. Now, however, we can be sure that she did so not because she wanted to separate herself from her AIB partners.
