tl;dr: With the GeForce RTX 3070, Nvidia offers GeForce RTX 2080 Ti performance for 500 euros. With the Asus RTX 3070 TUF OC, Gigabyte RTX 3070 Gaming OC and MSI RTX 3070 Gaming X Trio OC, ComputerBase is testing three different custom designs in competition with the very good Nvidia Founders Edition.

Custom designs from Asus, Gigabyte and MSI put to the test

With the GeForce RTX 3070 (test), Nvidia brings the performance of a GeForce RTX 2080 Ti into the 500 euro class. This is a clear step forward, and the Founders Edition also proved to be efficient and quiet in the test. The overall package is convincing, even if there is one point of criticism: The memory expansion of 8 GB has not grown compared to the GeForce RTX 2070 Super, which should be classified as problematic in 2020 with the upcoming next-gen consoles.

A strong competitor on the horizon

In addition, there is new, apparently very strong competition. AMD has presented the Radeon RX 6800, which is more expensive on paper, but is also said to be faster in rasterizer titles and offers 16 GB of VRAM. The question of which of the two graphics cards is better is not yet the subject of this article – the embargo on the Radeon is expected to fall on November 18th.

ComputerBase has grabbed three different custom models and is testing whether they can trump the good Founders Edition. In comparison, the Asus GeForce RTX 3070 TUF OC, the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3070 Gaming OC and the MSI GeForce RTX 3070 Gaming X Trio OC, all of which are competing for the same clientele.

Asus RTX 3070 TUF is very similar to its big brother

The Asus GeForce RTX 3080 TUF OC (test) was a thoroughly positive surprise, because in the test the graphics card was the first TUF model to please. Accordingly, the expectations of the smaller GeForce RTX 3070 TUF are high. Asus doesn’t seem to want to leave anything to chance and relies on the same cooling system – albeit with a few drawbacks.

There have been no changes to the fans and the radiator cover. Three axial fans with a diameter of 85 mm provide fresh air and the feel and look of the graphics card are of high quality. However, there are a few differences with the 2.7-slot heat sink. The GeForce RTX 3070 TUF OC has three smaller instead of two larger heat sinks, which are actually constructed in the same way. In addition, there are only 5 instead of 6 heat pipes. This reduces the weight of the graphics card by around 250 grams.

2 BIOS versions for quieter operation

Asus specifies the boost clock of the GeForce RTX 3070 TUF OC with 1,815 MHz, who activates the OC mode in Asus’ own tool GPUTweak II, receives 1,845 MHz. This means that the graphics card is overclocked by 90 MHz or 120 MHz. The 8 GB GDDR6 memory is controlled with the usual 7,000 MHz. Two different BIOS versions can be activated by means of the labeled switch. The performance BIOS is active at the factory, alternatively there is a Quiet BIOS. The latter works with lower fan speeds; there are no other differences in the software versions.

Asus lets the GeForce RTX 3070 TUF OC work with a maximum of 240 watts, 20 watts more than Nvidia’s reference specifications. If desired, the power limit can be increased to 270 watts. Two eight-pin power plugs are required for operation. The GeForce RTX 3070 TUF OC offers RGB lighting, which, with the illuminated TUF logo, is cautious, but very chic. Monitors can be connected via three DisplayPort 1.4 and two HDMI 2.1 connections.

The Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3070 Gaming OC relies on the tried and tested

Gigabyte has sent the GeForce RTX 3070 Gaming OC into the race. Unlike the competitors from Asus and MSI, the latest cooler development is not included in this model, Gigabyte relies on a familiar one instead. Because the WindForce 3X cooler was already available on the Turing models and delivered decent results there.

The 2.5-slot high cooler consists of three different aluminum coolers that are connected to one another by means of 5 heat pipes. Overall, the cooling surface is smaller than that of the other two test subjects, so the weight of the graphics card is more than 100 grams lower. Three axial fans with a diameter of 80 mm are responsible for the air supply.

The standard power limit is also the maximum

Gigabyte specifies a boost clock of 1,815 MHz for the GeForce RTX 3070 Gaming OC, which is 90 MHz more than Nvidia’s specifications for the graphics card. The 8 GB GDDR6 memory is controlled with the normal 7,000 MHz. There is a second BIOS on the graphics card, which is configured slightly differently with regard to the fan control. However, the differences to the standard BIOS are too small, which is why the alternative software is not discussed further in the test.

The GeForce RTX 3070 from Gigabyte offers a power limit of 270 watts, which is also the maximum. The TDP cannot be increased further manually. That is 50 watts more than the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Founders Edition. A 6-pin and an 8-pin power connector must be connected. The graphics card offers RGB, but more than a small gigabyte lettering does not light up. Monitors can be controlled with two DisplayPort 1.4 DSC and two HDMI 2.1 outputs.

The MSI RTX 3070 Gaming X is also similar to its big brother

Not only Asus, MSI is also based on the derivative of the GeForce RTX 3080 with the GeForce RTX 3070 Gaming X Trio OC. And this can only mean good things for MSI, because the GeForce RTX 3080 Gaming X was convincing. Visually, the two graphics cards can therefore hardly be distinguished from one another. As a result, despite the high quality, the cooler looks and feels rather “cheap” due to the large amount of plastic – but without being cheap in any way.

Because the GeForce RTX 3070 Gaming X Trio also relies on the 2.7 slot high Tri-Frozr 2 cooler, which comes with 3 axial fans with a diameter of 90 mm. But MSI also relies on a different division of the heat sinks for the RTX 3070. There are no longer two large, but three smaller cooling blocks that are attached above the GA104-GPU and the power supply. However, the 6 heat pipes of the larger card have remained and the reductions in the heat sink itself compared to the larger version are smaller than with Asus. Accordingly, the graphics card is only around 100 grams lighter.

MSI relies on a boost clock of 1,830 MHz for the GeForce RTX 3070 Gaming X Trio, 105 MHz more than for Nvidia’s Founders Edition. The 8 GB GDDR6 memory works with the normal 7,000 MHz. The manufacturer completely dispenses with a second BIOS, even if the position provided for it is even drawn on the circuit board.

MSI sets a maximum output of 240 watts for the graphics card, 20 watts more than a standard model. The power limit can be increased to a maximum of 250 watts. Two 8-pin power plugs are provided for operation. MSI offers full-blown RGB lighting in the GeForce RTX 3070 Gaming X Trio, but the quality is not convincing. The 6 LEDs in a light bar can be clearly seen, and they are also placed unevenly. The graphics card can control monitors via three DisplayPort 1.4 DSC and one HDMI 2.1 outputs.

The clock rates under load

The Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3070 Gaming OC shows the highest clock rate of the three test candidates in games. The graphics card can work at a maximum of 1,980 MHz at high temperatures if the power limit does not intervene. The graphics card holds that in Horizon Zero Dawn and Shadow of the Tomb Raider and only has to slow down slightly in the other three games. In Doom Eternal and Gears Tactics, for example, there are still 1,935 to 1,965 MHz. Depending on the game, the clock is 15 to 120 MHz higher than Nvidia’s Founders Edition.

The MSI GeForce RTX 3070 Gaming X Trio comes in “second place in terms of clock speeds”. The maximum possible 1,995 MHz is partially shown in games, but the graphics card cannot consistently maintain the frequency. The clock rates are mostly a little below the level of the gigabyte card, which is due to the lower power limit. Compared to the Founders Edition, the clock is 30 to 90 MHz higher.

Unusual: Asus takes it easy

The Asus GeForce RTX 3070 TUF has to be content with third place. A maximum of 1,980 MHz is possible, which can also be reached briefly in one case. In general, the clock rates are slightly lower than on the MSI card, which apparently works a bit more efficiently, despite the same power limits. But the differences are not great. Compared to Nvidia’s Founders Edition, the frequencies are 15 to 60 MHz higher.
