RTX 3070 with 16GB of homemade memory: Nvidia, watch and learn!

To double the memory on the RTX 3070, thus giving it more VRAM than the recent RTX 3060 12GB, the modder has replaced the GDDR6 chips, passing from the 1GB models (K4Z803256C-HC14) to those from 2GB (K4ZAF3258M-HC14) – both made by Samsung. Physical replacement alone, however, is not enough, in fact it is also necessary act on the software part to recognize the chips. After some testing, VIK-on identified the “right” numeric code to get the GPU and the new memory to interface and function properly.

The result is a card correctly recognized by software such as GPU-Z and can be used to play, test or even mine cryptocurrencies. Initially the card proved unstable, but by going to lock the frequency with EVGA Precision it was possible to obtain the stability necessary to carry out some tests. The 16GB RTX 3070 scored 13783 points in the 3DMark Time Spy graphics test and 4914 points in the Unigine Superposition 8K Optimized, both of which are slightly higher than the traditional RTX 3070 FE with 8 GB of VRAM.
