We learned that the British Type 45 destroyers will be upgraded on the air defense side, complementing the arsenal of pure Aster 30 Block 0 missiles to combat, inter alia, drones, cruise and anti-ship missiles. These ships will receive the Aster 30 Block I missiles under the latest contract signed by the Ministry of Defense of the country for the modernization of the capabilities of the Type 45 destroyers.

According to official information, the Russian navy is introducing the 3M22 Zircon hypersonic missiles into service, which due to their hypersonic speed are considered a “super weapon” due to the lack of systems to combat them. However, as Russia describes as hypersonic missiles those whose flight characteristics match ballistic missiles, the latest enhancement of British destroyers could provide Britain with a way to counter 3M22 Zircon.

The Aster 30 Block I missiles in their basic version and according to official information, can fight ballistic missiles, e.g. with a range of 600 km. However, in the Block INT that is currently being finalized, which is being handled by MBDA, their capabilities are to be expanded in line with the destruction of ballistic missiles with a range of up to 1500 km. Thanks to this feature, the Type 45 destroyers in the service of the British Navy will most likely be able to fight the Russian Zircon.
