The Polaris 20 GPU is a circuit-based version of the Polaris 10 chip with the Graphics Core Next 1.3 microarchitecture, which AMD used in the Radeon RX 470 and RX 580. In AMD’s production plans, the Polaris family represents an interim milestone on the road to a massive Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture update that will bring next-generation Vega chips. The innovations in Polaris chips should fix weaknesses that are holding back the performance of predecessor products based on GCN version 1.2 logic (GPUs Tonga and Fiji). The first place in this list is occupied by color compression with a ratio of up to 8: 1, which allows more efficient use of the bandwidth of the RAM bus. Another weakness of the AMD architecture – the speed of the early stages of the graphics pipeline that perform projection and transformation of polygons – is compensated by the optimization of the geometry engine, which in GCN 1.3 is capable of cutting off polygons of zero size or polygons without pixels in the projection at the early stages.
In the field of general-purpose computing (GP-GPU), GCN version 1.3 brought support for half-digit number formats – int16 and FP16, which are used in tasks that do not require more accurate representation (such as, for example, machine learning, which is so promising today).
The updated multimedia unit allows hardware encoding and decoding of HEVC Main 10 and VP9 video formats up to 4K resolution. The display controller supports DisplayPort 1.3 / 1.4 and HDMI 2.0b high dynamic range (HDR) output.
