Purchase history Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT

It all started, as strange as it may sound, with my unsuccessful attempts to buy a GeForce RTX 3080 in the CSN store. When cards from “green” appeared on the website of the federal network, for the first time I tried to place an order without payment. But no matter what model of GeForce RTX 3080 I made out, after some time my order was canceled by the operator unilaterally. Realizing that the number of gamers who want to buy a GeForce RTX 3080 is many times greater than the availability of goods, I tried to place an order with online payment. But even then I was in for a failure – the operators of the call-center of the CSN called me back, apologized, explained that the goods were out of stock, and the orders were canceled again. And I perfectly understood what was happening, because even the company officials gave comments in the CSN Club of the view “

The turning point for me was the news in the CSN club that the start of sales of AMD Radeon RX 6800 and 6800 XT is scheduled for Tuesday. Realizing that in clicking the mouse while placing orders on the site, I lose in speed to pro-gamers from CS: GO, on Tuesday morning of the announced sales day, I went to the nearest CSN store. Arriving there before the opening, I took a seat opposite the entrance and began to wait for the opening of the store. As soon as the CSN branch opened its doors and I managed to step inside, I was immediately greeted by friendly store staff with the question “Do you have a refund ?!” Probably my expression was annoyed by more than five canceled orders for the GeForce RTX 3080. I explained the situation as it is, making it clear that I was determined to buy, not return goods. The manager who listened patiently to me replied, that the base has not been synchronized yet and I need to wait 11.00 before the video cards appear on sale and their prices. To wait, I was given an office chair and a window seat so that I could control my personal car in order to avoid evacuation from under a parking sign.

It seemed that that hour lasted forever! And when exactly at 11.00 the same manager called me to the service terminal, I followed him practically on tiptoe, as if afraid to frighten off my luck. For purchase, I was offered a choice of three Radeon RX 6800 XT video cards in the reference design, the differences between which were only in the manufacturer and cost.

After a short consultation and clarification of the warranty terms, my choice fell on the Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT for 63,999 rubles. I received an order with 100% prepayment, and was told to expect a call upon the arrival of the video card to the store. After 3 days, they called me back from the same branch of the CSN with a request to visit the store and pick up the ordered goods. Not fully believing in success, but inspired by hopes, I rushed to the CSN through traffic jams. After 10 minutes, the Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT video card was already in my hands, and at the same time I managed to buy a motherboard for the Mini-ITX assembly.

This is my story of buying a Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT video card. Absolutely not thinking initially about buying a graphics adapter from the “red” and trying to repeatedly purchase a GeForce RTX 3080, I had to go through it. A trip on a cloudy morning of a working day through traffic jams, presence in the store for more than an hour, as well as three days of waiting for the arrival of an order. But enough of the lyrics, let’s take a look at the video card itself and evaluate it in operation!

Packaging and delivery set

The Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT video card comes in a small cardboard box, on the front edge of which the name of the graphics adapter and its key characteristics are indicated. This is, first of all, support for the PCI Express 4.0 interface, ready for 4K gaming and 16 GB of GDDR6 memory.

The back of the box contains the minimum system requirements, in which the power of the power supply is important. For Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT, a 750W or higher power supply is recommended.

The video card comes with only a user manual and a card with the manufacturer’s data.

Appearance and features

In the reference version, Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT looks stylish and original. The combination of aluminum parts and black paint on some elements in the design of the cooling system shroud provide a striking appearance to this graphics accelerator.

The dimensions of the Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT are 267 x 140 x 50 mm, which makes it possible to install this video card in cases where there are three free expansion slots. Due to the aluminum casing and heatsink made of copper, the video card has an impressive weight of 1517 grams.

The back of the Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT is equipped with a metal backplate that protects the PCB from bending and mechanical damage.

When installed in a PC case, the hallmark of the graphics adapter will be a bright red line along the perimeter and an LED backlight module with the inscription “RADEON”.

Here, on the upper end of the video card, there are a pair of 8-pin additional power connectors.

For image output, the Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT offers the user one HDMI 2.1 and a pair of DisplayPort 1.4. Also on the rear panel of the connectors there is one USB 2.1 Gen2 Type-C for connecting a virtual reality headset.

Since the Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT video card was purchased from DNS and is under warranty, there will be no usual analysis to get acquainted with the cooling system.

Instead, I will demonstrate how the CO of a video card is arranged using the example of a proprietary 3D layout from AMD. Key to this design is a massive copper vapor chamber heatsink, blown by three fans with Zero RPM technology. Contact with the GPU is realized through a graphite thermal pad, designed to provide more efficient heat dissipation from the Navi 21 XT crystal.

The reference Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT uses a 14-layer PCB with 4 2-ounce copper layers per square foot. The power supply system of the video card is built on a 15-phase scheme, where 12 phases are allocated for the Navi 21 XT GPU and 3 phases for the GDDR6 memory chips.

RGB backlight

The Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT graphics card has a modest, but expressive, and to some extent even aggressive LED backlighting. It is made in the form of the “RADEON” inscription on the upper end of the graphics accelerator. In combination with a bright red line, it looks very impressive! With this design, this video card stands out perfectly in the gaming assembly against the background of other components. The only thing about the Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT backlight is that it always glows only red, and the backlight color cannot be changed programmatically.

Temperatures, noise, power consumption and overclocking

GPU-Z confirms that the Adrenalin 21.7.2 beta driver is installed, the video card is detected correctly, and the Resizable BAR technology is working.

First, let’s take a look at how the Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT cooling system behaves when the video card is idle. The GPU temperature is not low, but 52 ℃ is enough for the CO fans to remain at rest due to the Zero RPM technology.

We load Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT for 20 minutes with the Furmark stress test and we get the temperature on the GPU in the region of 78 ℃. At the same time, at standard settings, the video card raises the frequency of the graphics processor to 2350 MHz! But the algorithm of the cooling system fans on the Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT turns out to be even more interesting. The turntables spin up to only 1300 rpm, which, from a distance of 30 cm, gives a noise in the region of 36 dBA.

Raising the stakes for Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT by overclocking the video card through the driver’s control panel. We fix the GPU frequency in the range of 2450-2550 MHz, and unscrew the GDDR6 memory to a maximum of 17200 (2150) MHz. At the same time, the power consumption limit increases to the maximum allowed by the driver of + 15%.

Returning to the Furmark stress test, we see that after overclocking, the GPU temperature increased to 80 ℃, and a confident core turbo boost to 2516 MHz. The fans of the Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT cooling system accelerated to almost 1400 rpm, but the noise from their operation from a distance of 30 cm does not exceed 36.5 dBA.

Gaming performance

Now let’s see how fast the Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT video card is out of the box, as well as the performance gain from overclocking it above the factory values. First, let’s do this using the example of the 3D Mark graphical benchmark, the test results of which are presented in the screenshots below. Left – Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT video card at factory settings, right – with graphics adapter overclocked.

In order to figure out whether this is a lot or a little, I compared the performance of the Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT with the INNO3D GeForce RTX 3080 Ti X3 OC video card I have at hand. The results were expected, namely: the video card from red was stronger in DirectX11 benchmarks, while the adapter from green was faster in DirectX12 and the test using Ray-tracing technology.

In games, however, everything turned out to be far from in favor of the more expensive and theoretically powerful RTX 3080 Ti. The Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT video card showed the best result in three and five games, and in the two remaining games it provided no less worthy competition to the adapter from the green ones.

Conclusion

The Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT is a great gaming graphics card, especially if you manage to get it at the manufacturer’s suggested price. In my case, this turned out to be practically the case, thanks to the CSN store with its principled policy of selling video cards at prices close to the recommended ones. In times of market economy, companies such as CSN are very rare, and in this respect we are all lucky to some extent.

As for the video card itself, I have no desire to change the Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT bought for 63,999 rubles for a brand new RTX 3080 Ti with less memory. The reason is simple and commonplace – these are all video cards of the same performance level, with a slight margin from game to game. Somewhere the video adapter from the red is faster, somewhere more productive than the RTX 3080 Ti. The overall difference in performance is so insignificant for me that I see no reason to pay extra + 60,000-80000 rubles for a video card from green, trying to catch the RTX 3080 Ti in the N-wave of sales. Moreover, the new product has only 12 GB of video memory versus 16 GB of the Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT.

For those who, for some reason, have not yet purchased a video card for PC gaming, I wish good luck on August 11 at the start of AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT sales in the DNS network. As stated in the news, new items from AMD are already in store warehouses, and are just waiting for the day of the official release. Success and luck will accompany those who wake up earlier than others, as well as those whose mouse click will be fierce!
