Search engine DuckDuckGo had another record year in 2021

Privacy-focused search engine DuckDuckGo had another record year in 2021, reaching over 34.5 billion search queries for the year. In 2020, the search engine managed to get more than 23 billion queries, which was a huge jump from the 15 billion queries in 2019.

Google is the world’s dominant search engine, followed by Bing, Baidu, Yahoo and Yandex. Stat counter sees DuckDuckGo in sixth position with a global market share of 0.66%. Google dominates with 91.4%, followed by Bing with 3.14%. Even Yahoo still has a 1.53% market share.

DuckDuckGo’s market share is increasing year over year, and it’s probably only a matter of time until it overtakes Yandex and Yahoo. Yandex and Baidu are limited to a few regions of the world, and Yahoo search has been neglected for a long time. DuckDuckGo is likely to reach third place in the market in the next few years if growth continues.

In the middle of 2021, I calculated that 2021 would become another record year for the search engine.

DuckDuckGo could hit the 35 billion mark in 2021, considering there are still seven days to go before full 2021 search stats.

DuckDuckGo has already expanded beyond its search offering. It launched mobile apps, extensions that aim to protect users’ privacy, an email protection service, and recently a tracker blocker in its Android app.

The company plans to release a web browser for Windows and Mac OS in the future, which will not be a fork but will use the APIs provided by the operating system. The browser will use the website rendering APIs provided by Windows and Mac OS. DuckDuckgo has yet to reveal a timeline for the launch of the new desktop browser.

Cross-promotion could help the browser gain some traction in the crowded market. It will be interesting to see if DuckDuckgo’s search traffic continues to increase significantly in 2022.
