Seasonic shows 12-pin connector for Nvidia’s “Ampere” graphics card

The next generation Geforce graphics card from Nvidia is coming in and in about a week the company will hold court, an occasion where the RTX 3000 series will probably be officially unveiled. A lot of information about the upcoming products has found out on rumors, where pictures of a porky reference model of RTX 3090 are among the latest.

The Nvidia-signed cooling solution seems to be an unusual creation with dual fans on different sides of the card, but this detail alone does not seem to be a deviating feature of the product family. Earlier this summer, it was reported that a special 12-pin connection may be needed for the power supply, and now the reputable power supply manufacturer Seasonic confirms this through pictures of an adapter.

The manufacturer has published a picture of the adapter on the Chinese website bilibili.com, but there the company representative claims that it is not carved in stone that the different connection is required. At present it is claimed to be a test, but despite this, the site Hardwareluxx has received the adapter, which according to the packaging is a finished product with the flexible name “Nvidia 12-pin PCIe Molex Micro-Fit 3.0 Connector”.

At one end of the 75 cm long cables, two 8-pin connectors for connecting to modular Seasonic power supplies can be seen. On the other hand, they end up in the 12-pin variant. The label on the packaging indicates that the wiring is intended to drive power-hungry donuts, as a power supply with a power class of 850 watts is recommended.

It remains to be seen if the new connection will become standard for the Geforce RTX 3000 family, or if third-party manufacturers can go back to combinations of 6- and 8-pin PCI Express connections. Something that is also shrouded in obscurity is whether graphics cards with a 12-pin connector are supplied with adapters for the above-mentioned PCI Express power connectors.
