Several dozen Samsung smartphones have been banned in Russia

Samsung is one of the most popular smartphone manufacturers in the world. It also occupies top positions in sales rankings. it is difficult to explain the reason why their sale would be prohibited in some country. And yet. As many as 61 Samsung models have just been banned in Russia. Why?

It started with the Samsung Pay payment system. The system was launched in 2015, and in Russia – in 2016. In this country, it is the third most popular type of electronic payment. So why was it a problem? It is a breach of a patent by the Swiss company SQWIN SA, which developed it 8 years ago. These are not empty charges, as they were confirmed by the Moscow Arbitration Court.

Although it would seem that the ban should only apply to Samsung Pay, the sale and import of as many as 61 models of smartphones that support this payment standard were ultimately banned. So this applies to flagships such as the Galaxy S21 or Galaxy Z Flip 3, but not only, because older models from the lower shelf also catch on.
