Location sharing can be instant, meaning sharing your current location, or it can be live, meaning your location can be tracked as it changes in real time. There are many free tools that you can use to share your location in any way.

Google maps

Google Maps allows you to share your live location with a friend. The Google Maps application must be installed on your phone and the application must have access to your location.

1. Abre Google Maps.
2. Tap your profile picture and select Share location.
3. Touch Share new.
4. Select a contact or tap More options and turn on Share with a link.
5. Copy the link and send it to a friend or family member.

The link will be active for an hour, after which you will have to share your location again.

Whatsapp

WhatsApp also has a location sharing feature and is more flexible than Google Maps. You can send your current location or you can share your location live.

1. Open WhatsApp.
2. Touch the attachment button or the plus button.
3. Select Location from the menu.
4. To share your current location, select ‘Send your current location’. This will not be updated if you move.
5. To share your live location, select Share Live Location.
6. Select how long you want to share your location: 15 minutes, 1 hour, or 8 hours.
7. Press Send.

iMessages

IPhone users can share their location with their contacts through iMessage.

1. Open the Messages app on your phone.
2. Select the contact you want to share your location with (must also have iMessage).
3. Touch Send my current location to share your current location, which will not be updated when you move.
4. Touch Share my location to share your location live, which will be updated when you move.
5. Select how long you want to share it; indefinitely, until the end of the day, or for an hour.

Limitations

All location sharing solutions require your phone to have an active internet connection. If you lose your Internet connection, your location cannot be traced. If you think you will be passing through an area where you may not have reception, it is a good idea to check in with someone by text message or call before entering and after you have reception again.
