Today I’m going to introduce you to Antec’s latest star, the Edge power supply in 650 Watts version! Once again Antec has teamed up with Seasonic to offer us a quality power supply, silent, completely modular but not only because for once the eccentricity is required with an LED at the fan level (can be deactivated) as well as anti bands. -vibrations on the sides, black or red! As you can see, Antec is attacking “gamers” and other modders with this Edge series, let’s see what it has in its belly!

We find a box with a rather colorful front face predominantly yellow / gold which goes hand in hand with the 80Plus Gold certification of the small edge, we find a photo of the power supply as well as the model, the maximum efficiency (92%) and the main strengths of the beast namely anti-vibration bands, a silent FDB fan with LED as well as total modularity. As usual at Antec, there is no excessive marketing and we won’t complain!
At the back there is a more complete listing of the main characteristics of the power supply, 5-year warranty, electrical protections, flat cables, etc. And this in 6 languages!

On the side we find the technical characteristics of the power supply, namely the power distribution table as well as the number of connectors.

Once the box is open, we fall on a double layer of cardboard which surrounds the power supply itself so that it resists transport damage, on the right is the bag of modular cables as well as a power cord and the 2 anti-vibration rubber sets.

Under the cardboard is the small edge in its plastic bag to avoid scratches!

The bundle is therefore quite correct for a power supply, the rubbers should delight fans of customization equipped with a PC with a window, I regret the lack of cable ties, however, so practical.

Here is the beast! For the greatest pleasure of your eyes I have equipped the 2 sets of rubbers to give you a bit of an idea of ​​the final look, a sober look and another more flashy and typical “gamer” because everyone now knows the red = gamer for rather obscure reasons, but that is not the question! The build quality is very good and the block exudes quality as usual, let’s take a closer look!

Small change here at Antec with the disappearance of the honeycomb grid for a grid made of parallel metal bars, like prison bars! Be quiet! already uses this type of grid for some time now, the visual is more successful. The captive fan is a HA13525H12F-Z, transparent model equipped with an LED and an FDB motor (Fluid Dynamic Bearing, normally quieter than a ball bearing but also a little less enduring) rotating at a maximum speed of 2000RPM .

Here is the beast once lit in the dark, it’s really flashy! If you are a fan of light all over the PC then you will be delighted!

Opposite the fan there is a sticker displaying the exact model of the power supply as well as the power distribution table, we can see that the 12V is divided into 2 rails of 35A each for a total of 648Watts combined .

On the sides a honeycomb grid allowing a glimpse of the interior of the beast, an Antec logo is present. Note that the grilles (on both sides) are blocked by a transparent plastic inside, the goal is not to gain airflow but only aesthetic, especially when the LED is on!

On the outside, a honeycomb-shaped grid covers the entire space, only a sticker with the Edge logo as well as the On / Off button and the mains plug are present, nothing out of the ordinary!

Unlike the Seasonic G from which it comes, the Antec Edge is 100% modular, 4 sockets for peripherals (hard disks, drives, etc.), 2 sockets for the motherboard as well as 3 sockets for PCIEs and CPUs. Note that the 24-pin of the motherboard as well as the peripherals and 1 PCIE socket are on the first 12V rail while 2 PCIE sockets are on the second rail. The fan’s LED On / Off button is also present, too bad it is not at the back of the box, so you will have to open and close it if you ever want to fart in front of your friends.

Modular cables

As we can see the quantity of connectors is very sufficient, 4 x PCIe 6 + 2-pin, 9 x Sata, 6 x IDE and 1 x FDD, enough to power a very large machine based on SLI / Crossfire. The cable length is also very good especially for the 4 + 4-pin CPU cable which is generally the one that causes the most problems in large towers, there with its 65 cm there will be no problems!

As I said at the beginning of the article the Antec Edge 650 Watts is therefore a power supply with an 80Plus Gold certification, so a maximum efficiency of at least 92% at 50% load. The 2 12V rails provide a total of 648 Watts, point of trick here the power supply is sold as a 650 Watts and 650 Watts are of course available on the 12V! As usual, all electrical protections are required in order to best protect the equipment (and the risk of fires).
The dimensions are average with 17 cm in length while the weight is 1.8 kg but without cables.
Offered at a price of $ 129.99 (can be found around € 110) it is positioned below the Seasonic G650 on which it is based, which should make it an excellent alternative, the 5-year warranty does not spoil anything table!

The test platform

The Antec Edge 650 power supply has been tested on the configuration below:

The test protocol

The core i7 875K has been slightly overclocked to 3.2Ghz. The readings in charge were taken during an OCCT Power Supply test, the readings at rest were taken after 15mins on the desk.

The consumption

Before starting, let’s take a look at the performance of the power supplies compared to the Antec Edge 650, in fact the different 80Plus certifications will directly influence the consumption, so this will be a good way to have concrete results. Only the S12 600 does not have an 80Plus certification because it did not yet exist at the time of purchase (but the following versions of this power supply had the classic 80Plus certification, so 80% / 80% / 80% to 20% respectively / 50% / 100% load).

As we can see the results are completely within the norm and very close to the other 80Plus Gold power supplies in the comparison with 79 Watts at rest and 350 Watts under load, the results are also identical to the Seasonic G, normal you will say because the base is the same! One thing is certain if you are looking for a power supply with a very good performance the Antec Edge 650 is a very good choice.

The tensions

The load of my test configuration does not scare the Antec Edge 650 which displays a 3.3V to 3.39V whether at rest or in charge, a 5V at 5.06V always at rest or in charge and a 12V which passes him on the other hand from 11.98V at rest to 11.96V under load, a minimal variation. To summarize, the voltages are very stable, like the Seasonic G and the other high-end power supplies in the comparison.

Noise pollution

Attention : Part to be taken with a grain of salt, unfortunately not having access to the appropriate equipment and using an android application to take the readings the measurements below are only indicative! The readings were taken 15cm from the feed.

In terms of noise pollution, it is once again excellent with an inaudible power supply at 15cm at rest and with a very light also at 32dB under load, as much to say that once in a box we will not hear it and it will be drowned in the noise of other machine components. The results are identical to the Seasonic G from which it takes the base, so as not to change even if the type of fan is different (FDP on the Antec and ball bearings on the Seasonic G)!
Note, however, a very slight electrical noise which is present when the ear is glued to the power supply, like all the Seasonics that I have had in my hands, this will not bother 99% of people because the noise disappears afterwards. 15 cm.

Here we are at the end of this test, what to say about the Antec Edge 650?
Antec signs here an excellent supply, normal you will tell me when we decide to trust Seasonic for the internal electronics. The voltages are extremely stable, the performance is excellent thanks to the 80Plus Gold certification and in terms of noise pollution it will be totally forgotten. Antec has modified a few things compared to the Seasonic G such as the luminous fan (can be deactivated), the 2 sets of red and black anti-vibration rubbers as well as total modularity which makes it a very relevant choice for any look lover. atypical.
Offered at $ 129.99 (available from € 110) the Antec Edge 650 will find pride of place in a gaming configuration equipped with a windowed (or windowless!) Box.
