Hi all !
After the be quiet! Silent Wings 2 120 today I’m going to present a slightly less top-of-the-range model, the Shadow Wings 140 PWM!
Equipped with a smaller bundle than its big brother, the Shadow Wings does not have different types of bindings either, cost reduction obliges! Will it be a good compromise between silence and price?
As usual be quiet! focus on sobriety, only the main characteristics are present and we learn that the Shadow Wings inherits the Silent Wings technology.
Once the box is open we discover the Shadow Wings in its protective box which will protect it from possible shocks related to transport. On the back of this box there is an explanatory diagram of the assembly of the fan on a box using the included fixings.
Here is our Shadow Wings! It strongly resembles the Silent Wings 2 except at the level of the corners, which are fixed on the Shado Wings, the blades are exactly the same. The bundle is stripped down and only offers the bare minimum, 5 plastic rivets and 5 rubber washers to secure the fan.

On paper the characteristics look very good, with a maximum noise level of 18.4 dB the Shadow Wings 140 PWM should continue in the tradition of all be quiet products! and be very quiet. With an MTBF of 200,000 hours (almost 23 years!) And a 3 year warranty, the fan will undoubtedly be made to last.
The test platform
The Shadow Wings 140 PWM has been tested with the Prolimatech Megalahems radiator on the configuration below:
- Processor: Intel Core i7 875K @ 3,2 Ghz
- Ventirad: Prolimatech Megahalems
- Motherboard: Asus P7P55D
- Memory: Kingston HyperX 4 x 2 Go 1600Mhz
- Hard disk: WD Raptor 150 Go
- Graphic card: Sapphire Toxic 5850
- Food: Seasonic X650
The test protocol
The core i7 875K has been slightly overclocked to 3.2Ghz. The temperatures under load are an average of all the cores for 3 tests of 30 minutes on OCCT, the temperatures at rest were taken after 15mins on the desk (still an average of the 4 cores).
The fan has been tested against be quiet fans! Silent Wings 2 140 PWM and Noctua NF-A15
The temperatures
First of all, let’s start by recalling the rotation speed of the fans, indeed the be quiet! Silent Wings 2 and Shadow Wings both run at around 270 RPM in 5V and 1000 RPM in 12V, as for the Noctua NF-A15 it runs at 530 RPM in 5V and 1200 RPM in 12V. Also note that the room temperature was 29 ° during the tests (the joys of the south!)
The 5V measurement of be quiet! is only indicative and shows you that you have to be careful if you regulate your fans by hand, at 270 RPM any fan will be unable to cool a processor like the overclocked core i7 875K under load , more particularly with an ambient temperature of 29 °!
Once set to 12V the Shadow Wings obtains very good results and is on a par with its big brother the Silent Wings 2, the noctua turning at 200RPM more it is normal that it has better results but it only succeeds do 3 ° better!
The sound level
Attention : Part to be taken with a grain of salt, unfortunately not having access to the appropriate equipment and using an android application to take the readings the measurements below are only indicative!
Here we are in the crux of the matter, be quiet! How the name suggests makes it a point of honor to come out with the quietest possible products, and as usual the bet is successful! The Shadow Wings 140 PWM is a very quiet model and does almost as well as its big brother the Silent Wings 2 140 PWM. In 5V (270 RPM I remind you) the fan is quite simply inaudible even with the glued ear but the ventilation is then very limited as shown by the temperature reading and in 12V the sound produced is very neutral and pleasant. note that when it is powered on a 3-pin connector there is a slight noise related to the motor that is heard, noise which disappears when it is plugged into a 4-pin connector.
Here we are at the end of this article, is be quiet! sign yet another product combining performance and silence? The answer, if you’ve read the article correctly, is of course yes!
The 12V performance on the core i7 875K is very good (even in a room at 29 °) while remaining at a very low noise level and pleasing to the ear. The range of use is rather large with a minimum of 270 RPM (in 5V) and a maximum of 1000 RPM (in 12V), it will be perfect for use in ventilation of a box connected and regulated in PWM by the motherboard!
The fan being a range below the Silent Wings 2 this is felt on the bundle which is limited to plastic fixing rivets, point of choice for the fixing system like the Silent Wings 2 either!
The price of 17 € is therefore milder than its big brother (23 €) while keeping a 3-year warranty and will therefore be more affordable if you are looking to make yourself a quiet PC while having high-end fans.
The +
- Good performance
- Silence
- Price compared to Silent Wings 2
- SAV be quiet!
The –
- Bundle minimaliste
- Slight engine noise if powered by 3-pin
Many thanks to Armelle from be quiet! which allowed me to do this test.
