With the plethora of fans available on the market it is not really easy to choose the right model, quiet operation or performance, what is your preference?
be quiet! known for its products specializing in silence offers a wide choice of fans (which you can find here.), after the test of the Pure Power L8 500 power supply I will continue the momentum and give you an overview of the Silent Wings 2 120mm fan, the top of the range of the brand equipped with all the latest technologies and supposed to combine silence and performance, will it be able to win?

The box

The box is sober and rather classy, as usual with be quiet !, however, the present text announces the color, “no compromise on silence and performance” at least you are warned!

The bindings

be quiet! has put the package on the fixing systems, in fact you will be able to fix the fan using conventional screws, as below:

Note that this fixing system offers 2 positions “S” and “L”, the “S” position allows to have the casing of the fan in direct contact with the surface on which it is fixed while the “L” position will leave a space of about 1mm between the fan and this same surface in order to reduce the sound pressure and the noise, rather see the position “S” below:

As we can see the Silent Wings 2 is made to last, with its 300,000 hours of MTBF and a 3 year warranty you will be in peace for a while! It must be that for a price of 20.90 €, we have nothing for nothing! The announced noise pollution is very contained for a fan rotating at 1500 rpm.

The Silent Wings 2 has been tested with the Prolimatech Megalahems radiator on the configuration below:

The test protocol

The core i7 875K has been slightly overclocked to 3.2Ghz. The temperatures under load are an average of all the cores for 3 tests of 30 minutes on OCCT, the temperatures at rest were taken after 15mins on the desk (still an average of the 4 cores).

The fan has been tested against the Prolimatech sleek vortex 120mm fan and the Noctua NF-F12 PWM.

What can we say about the temperatures? The Silent Wings 2 is slightly behind the Noctua NF-F12 PWM in 5v as in 12v, nothing very alarming because the difference is only 1 ° and 2 ° respectively. What about noise pollution?

Attention : Part to be taken with a grain of salt, unfortunately not having access to the appropriate equipment and using an android application to take the readings the measurements below are only indicative!

The trend is reversed here with be quiet! being quieter than the noctua and prolimatech, it is inaudible at rest and is very quiet to the maximum. One clarification, however, concerning the “quality” of the noise, the be quiet! is devoid of any engine or electronic noise, the noctua has a lower sound and the hiss seems more present.

The performance of this Silent Wings 2 is good in terms of cooling, on the other hand the fan stands out from the competition in terms of noise pollution, or rather the absence of said nuisances! Indeed if you are looking for fans for a quiet pc you cannot go wrong by opting for these fans. The absence of extraneous noise and the overall sound quality of the fan make it a must have.
