The card is very complete as we can see, you will have a plethora of USB ports, a normally very sufficient number of sata ports (unless you are a hard drive freak) and all the necessary extras, such as a network card. 1Gb, an 802.11ac WiFi card (up to 867Mb) and even bluetooth 4.0!
The ventilation is not to be outdone with a fairly large number of 7 fans controllable by the motherboard, enough to ventilate your pc config in peace.
On the other hand, a rather strange little point for a motherboard of this price (~ 250 € I remind you) is the limitation of Crossfire and SLI to 2 cards, even if this affects very few people it will not be possible to put more than 2 cards simultaneously!

Gigabyte_Z87_UD5_TH_bios_1

Here is the Bios home page, on the left you will find information about the CPU (frequencies, voltages etc) and memory (frequency, voltage, timing). On the right are displayed the different voltages and the speed in real time of the fans connected to the motherboard (other than the CPU fans).
At the center of this home page are the quick settings allowing you to overclock or adjust your CPU / memory settings very quickly, if you want to set your processor to 4Ghz for example just change “CPU Clock Ratio” to 40 , restart and voila you have overclocked your processor! Different customizable profiles are available which will allow you to change the performance of your CPU / Memory according to your wishes (or your needs!).

Gigabyte_Z87_UD5_TH_bios_2

In the Performance -> Frequency tab it is possible to fine-tune all the frequencies concerning the processor, memory, PCIe bus, etc.

Gigabyte_Z87_UD5_TH_bios_3

In the Performance -> Memory tab it is possible to load XMP profiles or manually change all memory settings.

Gigabyte_Z87_UD5_TH_bios_4

In the Performance -> Voltage tab there are all the options you need to change the voltages of the CPU / Chipset / Memory / Power, nothing is missing!

Gigabyte_Z87_UD5_TH_bios_5Gigabyte_Z87_UD5_TH_bios_6

The Performance -> PC Health Status tab is very interesting and will delight lovers of silence, indeed it is possible to set Alerts when the fans malfunction or stop individually but especially the fans are adjustable one by one (Normal mode , silence or Manual) in order to refine the ventilation of the box as much as possible! A very good point for Gigabyte.

The rest of the Bios is very classic, with the choice of language (no French unfortunately), the priority of boot devices, the activation and deactivation of integrated peripherals etc… all that a bios is supposed to have!

Gigabyte offers us a motherboard with a fairly large panel of software available, without these being essential they can be useful if you want to overclock / adjust your fans / update your bios via Windows. I will take a quick tour of the different software available:

Gigabyte TweakLauncher

Gigabyte_Z87_UD5_TH_tweaklauncher

This small utility will allow you to quickly change the multiplier coefficient as well as the voltages associated with the processor and the memory, it is possible to overclock quickly and efficiently with TweakLauncher!

EasyTune

Gigabyte_Z87_UD5_TH_easytune_1

By launching EasyTune it is possible to overclock your processor with a simple click, by choosing one of the available presets:

  • Light: Overclock 4Ghz
  • Energy Saving: Downclock 800Mhz
  • Medium: Overclock 4,2Ghz
  • Default: 3,8Ghz
  • Extreme: 4,4Ghz
  • Auto Tuning: The software finds the best settings for your configuration on its own

As the name of the software suggests, it’s easy! With one click you can overclock your processor, very good for beginners, but be careful to control the temperatures once the settings have been applied because the software tends to be very large on the voltages applied.

Gigabyte_Z87_UD5_TH_easytune_4Gigabyte_Z87_UD5_TH_easytune_2Gigabyte_Z87_UD5_TH_easytune_3

The other 3 tabs are there for finer settings, voltages, memory and more! You have to know what you are doing if you start to touch this, use it at your own risk!

System Information Viewer

Gigabyte_Z87_UD5_TH_systeme_info_1
Gigabyte_Z87_UD5_TH_systems_info_2

The System Information tab, as its name suggests, presents information about your processor, memory and motherboard.
More interesting, the Smart Fan Auto tab makes the configuration of the fans changeable in 1 click with 4 predefined settings (Performance, Fulls Speed, Quiet, Normal).

Gigabyte_Z87_UD5_TH_systeme_info_3

This is certainly the most interesting part for any silent pc fan, it will allow you to configure the speed of your fans as you see fit in relation to the temperature of the processor (unfortunately only this temperature). The ventilation curve can be changed and you can make your PC as quiet as possible, or as efficient as possible, according to your desires!

The test platform

Gigabyte_Z87_UD5_TH_test_bench

The Gigabyte Z87X-UD5 TH has been tested with the configuration below:

  • Processor: Intel Core i5 4670K
  • Ventirad Processor: Noctua NH-D15
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte Z87X-UD5 TH
  • Memory: Kingston HyperX 4 x 2 Go 1600Mhz
  • Hard disk: WD Raptor 150 Go
  • Graphic card: XFX 7870 Black edition
  • Ventirad Graphics Card: Arctic Cooling Accelero S1
  • Food: be quiet! E9 580CM
  • Housing: Corsair Carbide 300R

Overclocking

Gigabyte_Z87_UD5_TH_overclocking_cpuz

The Core i5 4670K was overclocked to 4.7Ghz (1.3V) without having the slightest concern of instability throughout the tests, at 4.8Ghz it was not possible to run any bench even at 1.4V (with the indecent temperature that goes with it).

Cinebench R15

Gigabyte_Z87_UD5_TH_cinebench

As we can see the overclocking allows a gain of 21% in this test, a rather significant gain!

SuperPI 32M

Gigabyte_Z87_UD5_TH_superpi_32m

A gain of 1 minute and 13 seconds on the SuperPI 32M test is observed by overclocking the processor to 4.7Ghz, going from 8min20 to 7min7.

3DMark11 Fire Strike Physics

Gigabyte_Z87_UD5_TH_fire_strike

Here again, we observe a good gain of the prtie Physics of the 3dMark11 Fire Strike benchmark, going from 7718 to 9446, ie a gain of around 22% which is quite enormous.

Sata 6Gb / s speeds

Gigabyte_Z87_UD5_TH_crystaldiskmark

The speeds of the 6Gb sata on the Intel Z87 chipset are very good and slightly improved compared to the Z77 chipset, however the Marvel88SE9172 chipset does not allow to take advantage of the theoretical maximum offered by the 6Gb / s and will therefore rather be used for devices such as DVD / bluray reader / writer or even classic hard disks which in any case will not reach such speeds.

Deals Intel GbE LAN

Gigabyte_Z87_UD5_TH_gigabit

The throughput was tested by transferring a 7GB iso file hosted on a machine running Debian Wheezy and all over a Gigabit network. The Gigabyte Z87X-UD5TH offers a very good speed of 980Mb / s (download) and 975Mb / s (upload) which will be more than enough for all uses.

Wifi speeds

wifi gigabyte Z87 UD5 TH

The Z87X-UD5TH WiFi card has been tested in real conditions, and not glued to a high-end router specially purchased for the occasion, in fact in 99% of cases the PC is connected to the box so this will be the same thing for this test! The connection is made to a SFR NB6 box (optical fiber with a speed of 1Gb / 200Mb) and through a wall. As you can see the speed is quite good and will not restrict your connection (as long as you do not have a fiber optic connection).

Here we are at the end of this test, the Gigabyte Z87X-UD5TH offers a plethora of features, such as bluetooth, 802.11ac WiFi, 2 Thunderbolt outputs as well as 7 connectors for fans all individually configurable. The overclocking capabilities are very good as long as you can contain the high temperatures generated by the processor. The stability of the card is excellent, there were no crashes of any kind throughout the tests (only when overclocking too much and the card restarted instantly) so there is no problem. this level either.
Regarding the price, it is around 250 € and it will therefore really be necessary to have the usefulness of all these additional features to meet the costs, if your only goal is to make a gamer pc then a card cheaper mother will be more than sufficient otherwise you can turn to the Z87X-UD5TH without problems!
