Test pendrive Kioxia TransMemory U366 64 GB

A new flagship called TransMemory U366 has appeared in the Kioxia flash drive offer this year. This flash drive combines the style and form of one manufacturer’s model (U401) with the capabilities of the other (U301), although if you want the highest possible capacity, you should pay attention to the U365, which I had the pleasure to test before. Anyway, I invite you to test the Kioxia TransMemory U366.

Small, modest, elegant and solid, the TransMemory U366 at a glance

As is usually the case with Kioxia’s TransMemory pendrive, the U366 comes to us in a characteristic box with a window in the form of a plastic case. The manufacturer apparently took to heart the problematic opening of most of the packaged products and tried to make appropriate cuts around the most important specification and emphasize the 5-year warranty.

It is worth mentioning right away that the U366 is available with a capacity of 16, 32, 64 or 128 GB, of which we had a 64-gigabyte version with a real capacity of 58.1 GB. Each of them weighs a little, about 6 grams and measures just as little, i.e. 39 x 12.2 x 4.5 mm, reducing the size to the form of a kind of pendant. Don’t think, however, that this one-piece metal case is resistant to liquid and moisture, because it doesn’t take much to get water into the USB connector.

The TransMemory U366 is also compatible with USB 3.2 Gen 1 Super Speed, although it will work with any previous version of USB-A at a limited speed, of course. It should be the same with the system, but the manufacturer recommends using Windows 8.1 (or newer), or at least macOS v10.12. However, as you probably know – the appropriate format (U366 is formatted in exFAT) is the key to make the flash drive work on specific equipment. The only problem may be its lower transfer and file handling.

When it comes to the appearance of the TransMemory U366, it is a typical example of a minimalist and small flash drive, the only decoration of which is a solid casing with trademarks, capacity and the manufacturer’s name. On the one hand, it is crowned with a connector hidden inside, and on the other, not without a reason, a large, oval hole, which is to serve not so much as a lanyard cord, but a solid carabiner or key organizer.

TransMemory U366 performance, so no surprises

Kioxia does not disclose the performance of the U366 in the specification, emphasizing only its compatibility with the USB 3.2 Gen 1 standard, that is, the one that offers 5 Gb / s transfer. In practice, this translates to around 19 MB / s sequential write and 129 MB / s sequential read. This is not such an impressive level compared to the aforementioned U301 and U365, which in capacities of 128 and 256 GB respectively could boast a performance of 30 and 225 MB / s respectively. On this basis, you should easily decide which flash drive you should choose and what capacity.

As is usually the case with a flash drive, long write times are to some extent compensated by a much faster reading, which can be seen especially in the performance with random samples in the lead role. In practice, however, the TransMemory U366 maintains the transfer level and, for example, copying games weighing slightly over 32 GB to it takes a good 40 minutes, and from it about 8 minutes. On the other hand, after the memory bones are full, the performance of this flash drive remains at the same level.

Kioxia TransMemory U366 test – summary

Thanks to the possibility of comparing the TransMemory U366 pendrive with other representatives of the entire Kioxia family, we can confidently come to the conclusion that its small format and great-quality housing are a combination that has been elevated to a pedestal over efficiency. However, there is nothing wrong with that, because even though the U366 64 GB does not use the full potential of USB 3.2 Gen 1, its reading speeds are still sufficient to move key files of a reasonable size to your devices relatively quickly. It is worse with recording, because filling the entire pendrive with content of various types of files takes an average of five times longer. Therefore, the U366, available for about PLN 60, is recommended, but only if you care more about a small and durable, not the most efficient pendrive.
