Test RX 580 8GB vs RX 5700 XT

Today we are testing two legendary graphics cards from AMD, RX 580 vs RX 5700 XT. This is not a direct performance comparison test, but rather a test that will show how much AMD was able to improve their cards, and what the new RDNA architecture on NAVI crystals brought us. The graphics cards will be compared to the powerful Ryzen 5 3600x gaming processor.

Both video cards will be from Sapphire in Nitro + performance, the most top-end options.

And there is something to see, tk. the performance of the RX 5700 XT is truly impressive. It’s getting close to the RTX 2070 Super.

We will compare RX 580 vs RX 5700 XT in 6 popular games, from different developers with different game optimizations for hardware:

1. Battlefield V (2018) by DICE

• HDD: Western Digital Blue 1TB 7200RPM / 64MB Cache. For games.
• Power Supply: be quiet! System Power 750W.

Video comparison version of Ryzen 2700x vs 3600x

Battlefield V (2018)

RX 580 8GB:

• 1% Low — 56 fps
• AVG — 66 fps

RX 5700 XT:

• 1% Low — 95 fps
• AVG — 118 fps

From the first game, we can see that AMD has really managed to make an excellent competitive product. And this is just a passing architecture. We are waiting for RDNA2.

The difference from RX 580 to 1% Low is 69%, and the average FPS is 78.78%.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018)

RX 580 8GB:

• 1% Low — 72 fps
• AVG — 77 fps

RX 5700 XT:

• 1% Low — 100 fps
• AVG — 128 fps

In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the 1% low difference was 66.23%, and the average FPS was 38.8%.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (2018)

RX 580 8GB:

• 1% Low — 40 fps
• AVG — 50 fps

RX 5700 XT:

• 1% Low — 49 fps
• AVG — 62 fps

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is still bad for Radeon video cards. The RX 5700 XT was only able to show 62FPS at maximum settings, but in this case we have a problem with the processor, not the video card. It was the Ryzen 5 3600x that limited the performance of the RX 5700 XT.

Hitman 2 (2018)

RX 580 8GB:

• 1% Low — 41 fps
• AVG — 64 fps

RX 5700 XT:

• 1% Low — 67 fps
• AVG — 93 fps

In Hitman 2, the expected lead is 45-64%. And here is also the emphasis on the processor in the case of the RX5700XT.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

RX 580 8GB:

• 1% Low — 71 fps
• AVG — 91 fps

RX 5700 XT:

• 1% Low — 78 fps
• AVG — 100 fps

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order showed the smallest lead. But even here the performance of the RX 5700 XT was limited by the processor.

Metro Exodus 2 (2018)

RX 580 8GB:

• 1% Low — 24 fps
• AVG — 32 fps

RX 5700 XT:

• 1% Low — 47 fps
• AVG — 59 fps

Amazing result. Almost two-fold superiority of the new RDNA architecture. And here the performance of the RX 5700 XT rested on the processor.

conclusions

What can be said about the test results? First, the Ryzen 5 3600x limits the performance of the RX 5700 XT. This video card needs a more powerful processor. Secondly, AMD did manage to make a powerful product for good money. At the time of release, the RX 5700 XT cost as much as the RTX 2060 and outperformed the RTX 2070.

You can safely upgrade to the RX 5700 XT, but don’t forget about the processor. This video card requires at least Ryzen 5 3600x, otherwise the card’s capacity will be limited.
