Introduction

Hi all!

It’s been a while since we last had the opportunity to test a product from Seasonic, so we’re finally back today with the latest beast, the Focus SGX 650! We could say, another Focus? What is so different from other models? Quite simply because this is the manufacturer’s first model in SFX-L format, which means that in the small world of power supplies, it’s almost a party 😉
Are we finally going to have competition from the Silverstone models (like the SX-500LG tested here)? We hope in the editorial staff! On the program, 80Plus Gold certification, total modularity, hybrid ventilation, in short everything that makes its big sisters famous.
There are two different powers, 450 or 650 Watts according to your needs at recommended prices of respectively 110 and 130 €. The prices are of course higher on the close relatives in ATX, but this is not surprising and quite in line with the competitors. Let’s take a closer look!

The seasonic is therefore a particularly compact block (SFX-L requires) of 12.5 cm sides and 6.35 cm high, which means that it is not really possible to compare it to a “classic” ATX model. , it almost looks like we have a toy in our hands, but that only concerns its size! As with any self-respecting power supply these days, the Focus SGX 650 has all of the power for which it is sold on the 12V, via a single 54A (648 Watts) rail, so there is no manipulating the numbers to sell us the block for something it’s not.
The 80Plus Gold certification allows us to achieve excellent performance, and therefore particularly low heat release (60 Watts maximum, which is nothing). We are not at the level of the best 80Plus Titanium certification, but the block would cost perhaps three times as much for a rather questionable gain in practice. The ventilation is hybrid, with a fan that will remain off until a certain load (around 30% according to the manufacturer’s data) and we are not talking about a passive fan as we can see written here and there, because it just doesn’t mean anything 😉 The latter is a 12cm model with an “FDB” type bearing, supposed to be as reliable as a ball bearing without suffering from its higher noise level.
Offered at a price of around 130 € and guaranteed for 10 years, the Seasonic SGX 650 seems to be (at least on paper) particularly interesting, but let’s not sell the skin of the bear before having tested it!

Box and bundle

The box could not be more sober, a bit like all the brand’s products in fact. On the front we find the Seasonic logo, the certification, the mention of the 10-year warranty as well as of course the name of the model and its power, not even a photo of the beast!
At the rear, a list of its strong points is present, 100% modular, SFX-L to ATX adapter included, 12 cm FDB fan etc. There are also two graphics, the first showing the achievable efficiency depending on the load and the other the ventilation curve according to the load.

On the side, the technical information necessary for everyone is present. Whether it be the dimensions, the list of protections, the power distribution and the length of the cables, everything is there!

Inside the box, we can see that the manufacturer has decided to show everyone that we are facing a high-end product. The block is in its small bag, all sandwiched between two thick foams to protect it from transport, modular cables are also entitled to their bag, at least everyone is happy.

Regarding the bundle, we find the user manual of course, the power cord, plastic and scratch cable ties as well as the necessary screws and an SFX -> ATX adapter for better compatibility of the unit. Suffice to say that it is rather complete, there is no real need for more for this type of product!
