Motorola One is a model that I would probably consider when changing my private phone to a new one. It fits in with my rule of not spending more than PLN 1000-1200 per phone every 2-3 years. As exactly 23 months have passed since my last purchase, I was able to see what leap is offered by manufacturers in this price segment.

What is this fringe for?

At the outset, I must point out one thing that personally rejects me and makes my sense of aesthetics howl in pain – notch. Taking a tiny part of the display to put a notch for the speaker and lens. It’s neither nice nor functional – I would personally bury this idea as soon as possible, but without knowing why, the producers copy even such thoughtless solutions. However, let’s look a bit more favorably at the rest of the device. The shape is very nice and despite the 5.9-inch display (Max Vision HD +), the phone is very comfortable.

Construction

The weight is surprising, the Motorola One weighs its own and at the beginning it was hard for me to get used to it, but over time it stopped bothering me. The headphone connector is located on the top of the case, and at the bottom, accompanied by the speaker, two grilles and a USB-C connector for charging. On the back there is a slightly cut Motorola logo in the housing, which is also a fingerprint reader [działa jak należy] and two camera lenses with LED flash for photos. On the side of the device there are buttons for changing the volume and locking the phone.

What tempts the user the most is bare Android, which significantly translates into device performance – without slowing down overlays, the phone literally fluttered like crazy. There is no question of flagship performance, but for PLN 1000, I think everyone would be pleased. In this price category, there is a lot of competition for the One model, but I think it is worth seeing what Motorola wants to fight first.

A nice surprise was the addition of a transparent cover to the phone cover. The rubber but slim design of this case allows you to better protect the phone from scratches, and the phone’s resistance to falls is something that interests everyone. Motorola has equipped the One with Gorilla Glass 2.5D on the front and back. During the test, I sometimes dropped the model by taking it out of my pocket, but without any signs of breakage or scratching. Glass can be a deterrent with fingerprints, but surprisingly, this problem was not common. Only under the light you could see the fingerprints on the screen, on the back they are slightly less visible.

I got a white model that is not waterproof, but only splashproof. Even so, raindrops run down the front and back coatings in express mode. Summarizing the appearance itself – Motorola One with its design refers to premium class phones and I must admit that I liked these rounded shapes. Only this notch …

Display

Motorola One is equipped with a 5.9-inch display with a resolution of 720 × 1520 and a pixel density of 286 ppi. It is a pity that FullHD was not tempted in this model, but someone had to decide on a lower resolution, which also translates into the device’s performance. I have to admit thin frames [oprócz dolnej], make the use of One very comfortable and again, you can get the impression that this is a higher-priced device, and remember that the phone costs only PLN 1000. Unfortunately, I cannot say that the quality of the displayed image on the LTPS IPS matrix is perfect for me, Motorola is far from OLED screens, which I consider ideal in this matter. The objections will be mainly in terms of contrast, the brightness and colors are satisfactory, and the viewing angles are wide.

Three cameras

Two at the rear and one at the front. The rear is primarily a 13Mp lens with f / 2 aperture, autofocus and a single LED flash. The duo is complemented by a 2 Mp sensor, mainly for the portrait mode. The camera has several modes, including Cinemagraph, which allows you to take a photo with a moving element, or Spot Color, which has an effect similar to Sin City – it excludes all colors from the photo, except the one selected by the user.

You can see photos taken with the rear camera and selfies below. I tried to do them in various weather conditions, in automatic mode – let’s face it, most people using this phone will use the camera in this way. The autofocus catches quickly and accurately, the photos have a lot of detail [szczególnie w trybie HDR]but the colors can be a bit washed out, even dull.

The front camera has only 8 Mp, but it is supported by a tiny selfie LED in a dark environment. As for video, the phone allows you to record in 4K and 30fps, but without stabilization. This turns on only after switching to FullHD / 30 frames. Honestly – no madness. The photos are decent, but you can’t count on the wow effect. Photography enthusiasts will probably put a little money to buy higher-priced devices. For Kowalski, a Motorola camera is enough.

Bebechy

Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor, octa-core system, clocked at 2GHz, 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of mass memory as standard, which at this price is a sensational capacity. Add to that support for memory cards up to 256 GB and we have a really roomy beast in our pocket. The microphone and loudspeaker are another advantage of this model – both the vocals of the callers and mine sound great and I must admit, better than in my private phone.

TurboPower charging

In the set with Motorola One you will find a TurboPower charger. The manufacturer ensures that on a single charge from scratch, lasting only 20 minutes, you can get up to six hours of standby mode. During the tests, the phone was charged to 100% in about an hour, but the 3000 mAh battery could easily withstand a whole day of heavy use. At the price of PLN 1,000, there is no need to expect wireless charging, and this is also the case here – the cable remains.

Android One

Bare Android is what tigers like best. Motorola and Google provide security updates for three years after the device’s launch. In addition, we can be sure that our phone, starting with Android 8.1 by default, will receive support for new versions of the Android system [przynajmniej kolejnych dwóch].

Moto Actions i Moto Display

Moto Actions are gestures that are useful in everyday use – shaking the phone twice turns on the flashlight, and twisting the wrist twice turns on the camera. Simple, it works, I used it often. Moto Display means that the display has a stand by mode, where notifications and basic information such as time, battery percentage and date are visible every time the device is moved from a place where it has spent some time without moving. This doesn’t affect the battery drain much, so it’s a nice accessory that I also used a lot of.

Accessories

We’ve covered all of the most important things, but there are a few other items worth checking out before we conclude. Motorola One has NFC, a dual-band Wi-Fi antenna and two SIM card slots, but this solution is out of the question when instead of a second card, we want to use the option of adding an SD card. The headphone jack is at the top, so if you want to listen to music and carry the phone in your pocket, it is a convenient solution without breaking the cable.

Summary

The phone is really decent, both in terms of specifications and software [Android One!], cameras and design. You should also remember about the price of only PLN 1000, which is also a huge advantage of Motorola One, but also a certain limitation. The company had to make compromises, hence, among others no FullHD display or the use of LTPS IPS itself, which is still a weaker alternative to a full-fledged IPS.

Motorola One is a good mid-range smartphone that could be a hit with upcoming promotions, especially as local mobile network operators also promote this model in their ads. If you are not demanding users, do not live up to the results in super advanced 3D games or do not expect camera-like photos for a few thousand more, you will definitely appreciate the capacious battery, smooth operation and very clear conversations. A remarkable representative of the middle price range.
