The least we can say about the Core X5 from Thermaltake is that it’s a big baby! With 54 cm deep to 46.3 cm high and 37.1 cm wide, it is clear that it will take a lot of space no matter where it is installed, its 12 kg do intend not to be transported daily 😉

This Obvious overweight to all new gives it however many advantages in terms of cooling, indeed a total of 22 fans of 12 cm can be installed simultaneously! All this is divided into 3 locations of 12 cm at the front (or 2 x 14 cm / 1 x 20 cm), 1 x 12 cm at the back (or 1 x 14 cm), 6 x 12 cm above ( or 4 x 14 cm / 2 x 20 cm), 6 x 12 cm below and 3 x 12 cm on the sides, enough to ventilate a very large configuration without the slightest problem!

Of course, who says fan locations also says radiator locations, 2 x 360/280 mm above, 1 x 180/280/360 mm in front, 2 x 360 mm below and 1 x 360 mm on each side, as much to say that installing a huge custom water-cooling system (or AIOs) won’t be a problem.

In terms of the space available for the components, the processor cooler will be 23 cm high, the graphics card can reach 33 cm (with the 5.25 ″ peripheral cage installed) or 48 cm and the power supply is 22 cm, so good luck finding a product that will not fit in the box!

Of course the dust filters are there (on the sides, below, in front and above) but the biggest strength of the Core X5 is its modularity, indeed it is possible to remove all the elements as needed for adapt the box to the configuration (and not the other way around in almost all cases), you can see the photo of all the elements removed here.

Offered at a price of around € 170 for the Riing Edition version of today’s test (€ 140 for the classic version), the Core X5 has great advantages for those who want to have a monstrous configuration at all levels, let’s see if he keeps his promises!

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_box1

The box of the Core X5 is simply huge, just like the beast inside! On one side there is a drawing of the beast in profile as well as the model, the brand logo and some logos specific to Thermaltake (“TT LCS Certified” which simply means that the box is compatible with water-cooling components, ” Modular ready ”which as its name indicates specifies that the box is modular and“ Stacking ready ”which indicates the possibility of stacking the box on another of the same model).
On the other side, an exploded view of the beast, we can clearly see that there are a lot of parts here and that everything is removable to adapt the case to the configuration according to the user’s needs.

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_boite2

On the side a table showing all the technical characteristics, at least we know what we are buying!

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_boite4

Once the box is open, we fall on a large polystyrene mold which will absorb shocks due to transport.

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_bundle

The Thermaltake Core X5 Riing Edition bundle consists of:

  • 1 Core X5 Riing Edition box
  • 1 installation manual
  • 1 handful of plastic cable ties
  • 1 “speaker” to connect to the motherboard
  • 1 plate to fix fans / pumps instead of a 5.25 ″ location
  • The necessary screws

As we can see, the Core X5 bundle is rather complete without going into eccentricity, but everything is there to install a configuration.

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition

Here is the beast! The least we can say is that the Core X5 is a huge box that clearly won’t go unnoticed. In addition to its large size, the Riing version is an apple green that is hard to miss, some will like it and others not, a matter of taste! The build quality here is excellent, and this down to the smallest detail, a very good point! It’s time to take a little tour of the owner.

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_exterieur_devant1

The front panel is maximally perforated to allow maximum air flow to the components. We can see 3 5.25 ″ slots, all equipped with a removable metal cover. There is also a logo at the bottom, in case we forgot!

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_exterieur_devant2

Once the facade has been removed, you can see the locations of the fans, as I said above it is possible to install up to 3 fans of 12 cm, or 2 of 14 cm or even 1 of 20 cm. Each 5.25 ″ cage is removable and fixed via 4 hand screws, in the case where fans other than the original one are installed, it will suffice to install the plate which is delivered as a bundle in a 5.25 ″ location. Openings are also available on the sides to facilitate the passage of cables if necessary.

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_exterieur_devant3

Behind the facade everything is covered with dust filters, the only problem being that it must be disassembled to clean, which is ultimately very fast.

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_exterieur_dessus1

At the top are 2 ventilation grilles which will be used in case of installation of fans or if another Core X5 is installed on top.

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_exterieur_dessus2

Once the plate is removed we fall on 4 rails which are there for the installation of fans / radiators. They are all removable and can be relocated according to the size of the fans installed, everything is done here to accommodate as much as possible all types of installation.

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_exterieur_dessus3

Under the top plate is a large magnetic dust filter, as in the front it will be necessary to remove everything to clean.

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_exterieur_dessous

Underneath, everything is still done to promote maximum ventilation, almost the entire space is openwork! 3 filters are present in order to reduce the entry of dust as much as possible, but not everything is 100% covered. The green removable plate that we see in the photo is there to communicate the inside of 2 boxes if they are stacked. There are of course 4 feet equipped with rubber pads to contain the vibrations as much as possible.

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_exterieur_arriere

At the rear there is a location for a 12 or 14 cm fan, an opening for water-cooling pipes, openwork extension brackets as well as some ventilation grilles. The little extra of the Core X5 lies in the possibility of installing the power supply on the left or on the right as we wish.

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_exterieur_cote1
Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_exterieur_cote2

One of the side panels is fitted with a large window to show the bowels of the beast while the other has 2 large ventilation grilles, behind these 2 grilles are magnetic dust filters.

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_exterieur_connectique

In terms of front connectivity, the Core X5 offers 2 USB 3.0 ports, 2 USB 2.0 ports as well as the eternal 3.5 jack for the microphone and headphones.

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_interieur_cote1

Here is the interior of the beast window side, at the bottom there is a plate to install fans / radiator, the rest is classic with 3 5.25 ″ slots and the plate accepting the motherboard. As we have seen and given the size of the beast, the motherboard is installed horizontally and not vertically!

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_interieur_cote2

On the other side in place of the fan plate are 3 plates for 2.5 ″ peripherals as well as 3.5 ″ slots in the part of the case. Let’s take a closer look at all of this.

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_interieur_carte_mere

The motherboard is therefore installed horizontally on a removable plate, openings are available to allow the cables to pass on its sides.

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_interieur_PCIE

The extension brackets are removable and perforated, all fixed by hand screws.

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_interieur_525

There are 3 slots for 5.25 ″ devices, each device will install without tools. Each slot is also removable, if peripherals are not needed, or additional front fans are required.

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_interieur_ventilateur
Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_interieur_ventilateur2

The two 14cm fans are equipped with green LEDs all around the frame, they spin at a maximum speed of 1000 RPM. The cable is equipped with a black sheath, a strain relief is installed to reduce the maximum rotational speed from 1400 RPM to 1000 RPM.

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_interieur_25

There are 3 slots dedicated to 2.5 ″ peripherals, 3 removable plates. Note that the opening present and which is supposed to allow the power and data cables to pass through may be too small and too close to the edge to allow certain Sata cables to be connected. For example, in the case of the test configuration, it was not possible to connect an SSD here, the Sata power cable being too long and did not allow the fixing of the SSD on the plate, a pity not to have thought.

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_interieur_lace_ventilateurs_cote

A plate is present for the installation of 1 to 3 fans of 12 cm, enough to add a good little air flow on the sides or to let out the hot air, as you wish!

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_interieur_alimentation

The food has all the space it wants on its side, up to 22 cm in length which leaves a big margin! Note that the metal bar that we see on the left is removable and must be removed before installing the power supply, once the beast is in place and attached to the back, the bar must be replaced.

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_interieur_cages_35

Under the motherboard and next to the power supply 2 cages of 2 3.5 ″ / 2.5 ″ peripherals are available, this will allow you to have a minimum of storage!

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_interieur_35

3.5 ″ devices install without screws, just twist the sides slightly and match the holes in the devices and the picos on the cart. 2.5 ″ devices will require screws.

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_interieur_cables

Classic here as regards the internal cables, they are all black and will therefore be easy to hide.

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_montage

As you can imagine there were no problems during assembly, the space available and the fact that all the parts can be removed makes assembly very easy. The configuration even if bulky swimming in the Core X5, the monstrous Noctua NH-D15 is almost small inside!

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_LED_ventilateur

A small photo of what the fan gives once powered on, the green color looks great all around the blades, as long as we like this color of course!

Thermaltake provided me with the Core X5 Riing Edition its latest accessory which is there to illuminate boxes with windows, the Lumi Color 256C! On the program 3 LED strips to connect to a box, 256 different colors are available to customize the look of the configuration as much as possible!

Thermaltake_Lumicolor_256_bundle1
Thermaltake_Lumicolor_256_bundle2

Originally the Lumi Color 256C offers a box that allows you to connect all the LED strips which is powered by molex, 1 scratch to put the box where we want in the box, 3 cables to connect the LEDs, a manual as well as of course the 3 LED strips that go with it!
On the box 3 buttons are present to customize the thing, one to change the intensity of the light, 1 to customize the color of our choice and another to choose one of the 7 pre-recorded colors. Here are some examples of colors that we can have, all in the Core X5:

Thermaltake_Lumicolor_256_LED2
Thermaltake_Lumicolor_256_LED3
Thermaltake_Lumicolor_256_LED4
Thermaltake_Lumicolor_256_LED5
Thermaltake_Lumicolor_256_LED6
Thermaltake_Lumicolor_256_LED7

As we can see the colors are vivid and the LEDs completely illuminate the entire surface of the tower, it is clear that if you want powerful LEDs the Lumi Color 256 will do the job perfectly!

In order to test the box, I will carry out an OCCT Power Supply test for 30mins and then take the temperatures of the main components such as the processor (average of the 4 cores), the motherboard, the graphics card as well as the hard drive.
Regarding noise pollution, I will proceed as in the file on silent PCs namely 1 statement in front, right, left, rear and above.

The Thermaltake Core X5 Riing Edition will face the case used for the silent pc backrest, the Corsair Carbide 300R modified for the needs of the same backrest as well as the Corsair Carbide 400Q (which is its direct competitor, the internal design being largely similar), NZXT H440, be quiet! Silent base 800, Cooler Master Silencio 652S, as well as the Fractal Design Define R5. Difficult to choose boxes facing the monster that is the Core X5 so much the architecture is unusual, so these boxes will be there as examples and not really competitors.

Rest

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_resultats_repos_temperatures

As we can see the components are very well cooled in the Core X5, better than in other cases even equipped with more fans. The reason is however very simple, the space available and the large number of openings! With 32 ° for the processor, 33 ° for the motherboard and 29 ° for the graphics card with 5V fans, it goes without saying that there is no need to worry about the components. Once the fans are pushed to the maximum, we lose a few degrees on the processor, going down to 29 °, 27 ° for the graphics card and 32 ° for the motherboard.

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_resultats_repos_nuisances_sonores

Ambient sound level: 31dB

The noise level with the components installed in the Core X5 is very good, with the fans at a minimum, all readings remain between 33 and 35 dB which is clearly not noisy even if all the vents available let out the slightest noise. With the raptor hard drive installed, however, the sound level increases a little because of the vibrations of the latter, the Core X5 is not spared like most other boxes but it remains however well contained, a more classic hard drive is not spared. should not pose any particular concerns.
Once the fans are fully charged, however, we go to 40 dB maximum at the rear, against 39 dB at the front, normal given that they are installed in these locations. Note that even if it is not noisy the box at this level is clearly heard.

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_resultats_repos_PWM

As for the other boxes, the fans managed in PWM remain at their minimum value at rest, namely 600 RPM for the processor and 500 RPM for the graphics card.

Charge

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_resultats_charge_temperatures

Here again the enormous space available allows the components to breathe very well. With the 5V fans the processor climbs to a maximum of 59 °, the graphics card 63 ° and the motherboard 41 °, really excellent and quite logical results. Once the fans are pushed to the maximum we once again lose a few degrees to go down to 57 ° for the processor, 60 ° for the graphics card and 37 ° for the motherboard, it is clear that the components in the Core X5 are really very well treated.

The comparison with the other boxes is however not really fair, the Core X5 offers a completely different architecture and a space very much superior to the others, so logically the results are better.

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_resultats_charge_nuisances_sonores

Ambient sound level: 31dB

With a maximum of 37 dB at the rear when the fans are at minimum the Core x5 is very good here, on the other hand it is clear that we can hear the noise of all the elements of the PC no matter where we are. , even if it does not really show on the graph, the ubiquitous openings are of course the cause.

Once the fans are at maximum, the sound level does not change compared to the results observed at rest, they cover the noise of all the elements of the PC, with 40 dB it is certainly not unbearable but it is not silent either. .
Note that the general noise level of the Core X5 more than the other boxes will be linked to the installed components, they will only be very little muffled, so you will have to be extra careful if you want to end up with a somewhat silent configuration .

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_resultats_charge_PWM

Very good air circulation generally rhymes with fans managed in PWM which rotate less quickly, this is the case with a maximum of 860 RPM for the processor and 600 RPM for the graphics card when the fans of the box are at a minimum against 810 RPM and 600 RPM with the fans of the case at the maximum.

Thermaltake_Core_X5_Riing_Edition_random

Here we are at the end of this test, what about the Thermaltake Core X5 Riing Edition?

Thermaltake offers here a case that gives pride of place to cooling and a monstrous configuration. The build quality here is excellent, nothing sticks out, everything fits together perfectly and the materials exude quality. At the original performance level, they are already excellent due to the space available, but this is nothing compared to what it is possible to do with more than twenty fan slots available (and the radiators of watercooling that go with it).

Noise pollution is contained with the original ventilation, but the fact of having a very open architecture (all the panels are perforated) will let the noise of the components escape much more easily than a “classic” box.

Modularity is the strong point of the Core X5, indeed all the parts inside are removable and can be placed in different places to accommodate the installed components as well as possible, almost everything is possible. For those who do not have enough of the enormous space available there will still be the solution to add another Core X5 on top to add “a little” space.
The only small problems that I noticed were on the plates of the 2.5 ″ peripherals, indeed with the power supply of the test (a be quiet! Straight Power E9 580CM) the Sata connector prevented the installation of the SSD because the cable slot too narrow, a problem that will not occur in all cases however, everything will depend on the power supply! The other little problem is still with the vibrations of the hard drives, indeed with the Wester Digital Raptor installed the general noise level was a little higher than without, but nothing too bad and should not have happened. with a more “classic” hard drive at 7200 rpm.
Offered at a price of around 140 € for the black version and 170 € for the Riing Edition version, the Core X5 is not for everyone, only those who need a lot of space and a lot of ventilation will be able to take advantage of the thing, in which case it will fulfill its role perfectly, for those who want a classic configuration then a smaller case will do perfectly.

The +

  • Build quality
  • Performances
  • Modularity
  • Lots of space available

The –

  • Too big for classic use
  • Beware of Sata connectors too long
    for 2.5 ″ slots

A big thank you to Letitia from Thermaltake who allowed me to do this test.
