Tether mistakenly released 5 billion USDT and immediately burned them

Tether mistakenly released USD 5 billion on the Tron blockchain and almost immediately burned them.

Twitter channel Whale Alert, which monitors large cryptocurrency transactions, reports that the Omni protocol has moved 50 million USDT from the wallet of the Poloniex exchange to the Tether wallet. After that, Tron was released on the blockchain and transferred to the Poloniex wallet 50 million USDT. Thus, the exchange simply transferred USD 50 million from the Bitcoin blockchain to the Tron blockchain.

However, as Tether technical director Paolo Ardoino told (Paolo Ardoino), an error was made in the process of moving, which led to the release of an extra 5 billion USDT on the Tron blockchain.

“Paolo is right – a mistake was made during the USDT transfer using Tether. An incorrect amount of USDT was issued, but then the error was corrected “, – told Poloniex representatives on Twitter.

Earlier, Binance announced a change in the standard of USDT addresses from Omni to ERC-20. According to Changpeng Zhao, the head of the exchange, this is due to the fact that only a small number of customers make deposits in the Omni standard.
