that's who challenges Galaxy Note

When it comes to smartphones with nibs, most enthusiasts rightly think of the Samsung Galaxy Note series, which recently saw the Galaxy Note 10 Lite model arrive on the market, sold at around 610 euros on Amazon Italy. On the other hand, we are talking about a range of devices that has made the stylus its peculiar characteristic and it is undeniable that currently Galaxy Note 10+ and Galaxy Note 10 Lite are the "smartphones to beat" in this market segment.
For more details on what you can do with the stylus on these devices, we refer you to our review of Galaxy Note 10+. However, there are also other companies that are aiming, more or less "aggressively", at the use of the nib.
These are less famous solutions than Samsung and we therefore took the opportunity of the recent announcement of Motorola Moto G Stylus to take stock of the situation on this semi-unknown, but still interesting, corner of the smartphone market.

Motorola Moto G Stylus

Starting from the latest arrival, Moto G Stylus is a smartphone that was unveiled by Motorola on February 7, 2020. It is a device that focuses heavily on the use of the stylus, as you can guess from the name. The accessory will in fact be included in the sales package and there is a slot to store it in the lower right corner of the smartphone. Once the stylus is removed, all the available options will automatically appear on the screen. At the moment it seems that the device is intended for the US market, where it will be sold starting from this spring at a price of $ 299.99.
In fact, among the models of the new Motorola range, currently the smartphone chosen to arrive in Italy is Moto G8 Power. In any case, considering the reduced selling price, Moto G Stylus can certainly appeal to a certain type of user. For more details, we refer you to the official Motorola website. If you want to see the smartphone in action, we recommend that you take a look at this video.

LG Stylo 5 and LG Q Stylus

LG is a company that has always wanted to experiment. Could a smartphone with a stylus be missing from the portfolio of the South Korean company? Obviously not and in fact there is Stylo 5, device launched in the USA in July 2019 at a price of 229.99 dollars. We are talking about one low-end smartphone, featuring a Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 processor and 3GB of RAM. The device never arrived in Europe and in general it went a little quietly also in the United States of America.
In any case, Stylo 5 has a slot for the nib at the bottom right and you just need to simply extract the latter to activate a screen that allows you to access the various features available, from reminders to the ability to color images.

In short, it could be an interesting solution for those who love smartphones with a nib. For more information on LG Stylo 5, we recommend that you take a look at this video. As for our country, in 2018 LG had made a device of this type arrive also in Italy. It is called LG Q Stylus and can still be found online at a price below 200 euros, but clearly we are talking about a smartphone now dated from every point of view. For more details, we refer you to the LG presentation.

Huawei Mate 20 X 5G and Mate 30 Pro

While not making it a peculiar feature and not providing the stylus in the package, some devices of the Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 30 smartphone families have official support for the M-Pen. In particular, the compatible models available in Italy are Mate 20 X 5G and Mate 30 Pro. Sold at around 40 euros on Amazon Italy, the M-Pen is nothing more than a nib with 4096 pressure levels which allows you to take notes directly on the lock screen or otherwise using the application linked to reminders.
There is also the possibility of quickly implementing many other actions, such as making a circular screenshot. This is a possibility that has gone quiet and few people have tried, but it could appeal to a certain type of user. To find out more about what can be done with the M-Pen, please see this video.

The patent of the OPPO nib that can call

As for the patents filed in the last period, it seems that the companies that want to focus on the nib are LG and OPPO. In fact, the former is thinking of a folding smartphone with a nib, while the latter apparently wants to go further and allow users to make calls via the accessory. In particular, according to what reported by Lets' Go Digital, in a patent filed last summer with the Chinese institution Cnipa, OPPO describes a smartphone in which the stylus can be "extracted" from the top of the device, essentially going to " detach "from the body. As for calls, the stylus would take advantage of the Bluetooth connection, an integrated microphone, battery and speakers to allow users to do this.
It is also likely that physical buttons are used to manage calls. In short, just detach the pen and you can answer from anywhere in the house, without having to always carry your smartphone, or at least this seems to be the idea of OPPO. Clearly, a simple patent does not mean that the Chinese company is actually making such a device, but it is clear that the company is at least thinking about this eventuality.
