The American Navy abandons new ships. What bothers the Freedom type?

The latest fiscal 2023 budget plan revealed that the US Navy is abandoning new Freedom ships. The reason for this is prosaic, and their removal from service will provide a total of $ 3.6 billion in savings.

America’s new Freedom ships will be phased out even though they’ve only been in service for 14 years

To say that the American Freedom class Littorial Combat Vessel of the Lockheed Martin project is a failure is like saying nothing. One thing is certain – those who agreed to implement the program are clearly regretting it now, which is confirmed by the announcement of their withdrawal, despite their young service. The reason for the withdrawal boils down to their numerous technical problems and the continued lack of full combat value, and in addition to limiting them only to patrol missions, even despite the recent announcement of the adoption of NSM anti-ship missiles on board.

Originally, 16 Freedom LCSs were to be built, and 10 were built, of which one (prototype) has already been withdrawn from use. Although the last handover of this type of ship to the U.S. Navy took place in 2020, their time will end once and for all in fiscal 2023, and the same will be followed by 15 other types of ships. The worst part is that the remaining 6 are currently in production and two of them are even at the equipment stage, so the US needs to get rid of them preferably by selling them to another country.
