A few days ago, on April 6, at the Spanish shipyard of Navantia in Ferrol, works under the ALTAMAR program have officially started, the result of which will be the unique, because the first Spanish F110 missile frigate. This happened three years after a total of five F110 frigates were ordered to eventually replace the older six F80s.

The first Spanish F110 missile frigate will be named Bonifaz with a side number F111, but its launch is far away. At the moment, only the steel cuts are in progress (the last moment concerned the ceremony of commencing these cuts), and the keel laying itself is to take place next year. Ultimately, the frigate is to be delivered to the Spanish navy in February 2027, and not in 2026, as originally assumed.
As for the details, these frigates will be a modified version of the F100. They will have the Spanish, i.e. the native SCOMBA combat management system, will be 145 meters long and 18 meters wide, while their displacement will reach 6,100 tons. They will be driven by the CODELADOG (COmbined Diesel-Electric And Diesel Or Gas) hybrid drive system from one GE LM-2500 gas turbine and four MTU 4000 diesel engines powering two electric motors. The whole will be complemented by a power supply system consisting of four power generators with a capacity of 3 MW each.

150 officers and sailors will operate two NH90 NFH multi-role helicopters, a 127-mm OTO Melara 127/64 LW Vulcano automatic cannon, two 30-mm cannons, a direct defense set, MK54 Mod 0 light torpedo launchers or 16-rail universal VLS vertical launch launchers Mk 41 with RIM-162 ESSM Block 2 short-range missiles and two 8-chamber Mk 54 launchers for Standard Missile SM-2 Block IIIB anti-aircraft missiles.
