The startup Iron Ox proved that modern technology can change the way a farm works. Several of the company’s sites in Northern California and Texas are unique and will be even more so soon. The Grover robot promises to reduce water, energy and land consumption, and to enable the company to respond quickly to market demands.

Reminiscent of an oversized home robotic vacuum cleaner, the Grover robot is able to lift 454 kg loads on wheels suspended inside a unique rocker arm and linked to a differential. It moves by selectively actuating individual wheels automatically using multiple LiDAR scanners as well as upward and forward facing optical cameras.

The cameras allow Grover to additionally identify the 454 kg, 1.8 x 1.8 meters hydroponically irrigated modules in which a variety of fruits and vegetables are grown. Once the robot locates the four-legged target module, it positions itself underneath it and then uses the motorized lift system to lift the target module completely off the floor.

Grover then moves the module to a robotic scanning booth for automated inspection. The robot can then move it to other stations as needed for additional watering, nutrient replenishment or harvesting. This provides a unique level of automation of the process of caring for crops.
