The Hydrus underwater drone is said to revolutionize ocean exploration

The market of autonomous underwater drones has just got a new, cheaper and supposedly very interesting alternative in the form of Hydrus. This underwater drone from the Australian company Advanced Navigation is expected to be available on the commercial market at a price of ~ $ 50,000 in the fourth quarter of this year.

The Hydrus underwater drone does not count among those that require the hire of a ship with a crane and a crew to use it. It is relatively small (470 x 260 x 260 mm) and light (6.7 kg), and uses seven lameless electric propellers, thanks to which it can move at a maximum speed of 7 km / h, dive to a maximum depth of 3000 meters and swim up to 9 km from the starting point.

One charge of the lithium battery should be enough for about three hours of work, during which Hydrus can, for example, record materials with its video camera in 4K / 60FPS resolution, illuminating the area with eight LED floodlights with a total power of 20,000 lumens. The use of this drone, however, is unusual, because users start by programming the route that Hydrus moves using several technologies.

While the Hydrus is still on the surface and has access to GPS satellites, it records the GPS coordinates of the starting point. When submerged, it uses built-in accelerometers and gyroscopes to track the speed and direction it is moving away from there, and is assisted by a sonar system that monitors speed and direction along the seabed. However, it is not a drone that can be taken over and controlled manually at any time.

Videos and data are saved on the built-in hard drive for playback after the mission is completed. The Hydrus can also use the integrated optical modem to transmit real-time data across the water for up to 10 meters. Potential applications of this drone include ecological research, three-dimensional mapping of the seabed (using a sonar system), as well as underwater inspection of aquaculture facilities and offshore wind farms.
