The largest freshwater wind farm is already in operation

About six kilometers off the Frisian coast in the northern part of the Netherlands and parts of northwestern Germany is Windpark Fryslân. It is currently the largest freshwater wind farm, which has just started operating at full steam on the largest lake in the Netherlands.

Located on a Dutch lake, the Windpark Fryslân farm is currently the largest freshwater wind farm

Located on Lake IJssel, the Windpark Fryslân wind farm has been commissioned, starting work on delivering as much as 382.7 megawatts of energy. It consists of 89 Siemens Gamesa wind turbines with a capacity of 4.3 MW each, and the Zuiderzeewindl consortium is responsible for its creation. They include the Dutch company Royal Van Oord and Siemens Gamesa. In turn, the owner and responsible for the farm is Ventolines, a company dealing in renewable energy.

Construction of Windpark Fryslân began in 2019 and was due to end in June, but due to the pandemic, logistical problems and unfavorable weather, its commissioning was postponed to the third quarter. It is expected to produce around 1.5 TWh of electricity per year, or around 1.2% of Dutch electricity consumption, which translates to around 500,000 households in the Netherlands.
