After more than two years, the fleet of 14 NATO Sentry E-3A AWACS aircraft has received a major modernization. This took place in Manching, Germany.

The modernization concerned mainly the cockpit. Until now, it had analog dials from the 70s of the last century. Now airplanes have digital displays that will provide the opportunity to better operate the plane. This will allow pilots to perform more complex actions.

The aircraft are based on the design of the Boeing 707. They have been a key component of NATO’s defense since the delivery of the first aircraft in 1982. Thanks to them, 24-hour protection against threats from the air is possible. Sentry E-3A AWACS can also act as a command, control and communication center in the air. However, the last of the aircraft was delivered in 1992, so modernization was already required. In total, NATO has 68 such structures, and some of them have already been improved before.
