MOSCOW, 24 Oct – PRIME. The number of DDoS attacks around the world in the third quarter of 2022 increased by 90% compared to the same period in 2021, their duration also increased by 60%, follows from a study by cybersecurity company StormWall, the results of which are available to RIA Novosti.

“In the third quarter of 2022, 90% more attacks were recorded than in the third quarter of 2021. The duration of attacks worldwide also increased. In the third quarter of 2022, the duration of attacks was 60% longer than in the same period last year,” experts summed up.

According to them, the largest number of DDoS attacks fell on the telecommunications sector (43.2%), the entertainment sector (21.3%), the financial industry (16.3%), online retail (14.8%), education (2.1%), logistics (1.3%) and other industries (1%). At the same time, the number of attacks on telecom companies, mainly for the purpose of extortion and blackmail, in the third quarter of this year increased seven times compared to the same period last year.

Specialists also noted that after the start of the pandemic, many companies were forced to provide their employees with the opportunity to work remotely, in connection with this, the load on telecom companies has sharply increased, and their responsibility for the services provided has also increased. Against this background, scammers began to extort money from them in order to avoid overloading networks and services with illegitimate traffic.

According to the study, the growth rate of DDoS attacks slowed down noticeably by the end of the third quarter of 2022, but “in general, the situation raises serious concerns,” as new developed DDoS tools allow for powerful sustained attacks.
